GATech College of Computing Holiday Gift Guide 2012

December 30, 2012 by Thom Abbott

GATech Holiday Gift Guide 2012My whole holiday motto for this year has been “see if you can be BEHIND everyone else in getting things done. My Holiday cards are sitting here next to me….(they get worked on tonight and tomorrow!)

But I did not want to let the 2012 Holiday Season pass without presenting this year’s GATech College of Computing Holiday Gift Guide.

“At Georgia Tech, we truly believe that computing is making the world a better place, so what better time of year to share some of our more exciting and beneficial research projects?” said Dean Zvi Galil. “When you take beloved holiday traditions, and you add a layer of computation, they become so much more. In this case, they become a bit funnier. Or at least we hope so.”

From a Nerd Herder to an app that let’s Google think you are searching from numerous computers, this guide is really more about the amazing work that comes out of the College of Computing.

Here’s the 2012 GATech College of Computing Holiday Gift Guide!

Older adults welcome robot help with chores

October 26, 2012 by Thom Abbott

See on Scoop.it – Georgia Tech News Events

Grandma and Grandpa would love a little robotic help around the house, a new study has found.

In a survey, a team of psychologists and engineers found that adults over age 65 felt generally positive toward the idea of having a robot help them with chores, although they preferred humans help for tasks such as getting dressed or eating. The study was designed to help robot-makers design appealing bots for seniors in the future, especially older people who want help so they are able to live in their own homes instead of moving to an assisted living facility or a relative’s house.

Robots and Georgia Tech“There are many misconceptions about older adults having negative attitudes toward robots,” Cory-Ann Smarr, a doctoral student in psychology who worked on the survey, said in a statement. “The people we interviewed were very enthusiastic and optimistic about robots in their daily lives.”

Smarr and her colleagues at the Georgia Institute of Technology showed 21 people aged 65 to 93 a video about a home robot, the PR2, made by California-based robotics developer Willow Garage. Researchers then asked the study participants the tasks for which they would want robotic assistance.

You’ve seen the workers, and the construction fencing and the renditions. But the Real McCoy has finally arrived!

Season Ticket Holders to GATech basketball got the first glimpse of the new McCamish Pavilion where both Men’s and Women’s basketball will return next month. The Men’s first game is November 9, followed by the Women’s on November 11.

I’ll be trying to get an inside scoop when I attend a game in the near future, but until then, take a peek at the new home of GATech basketball!

GATech Helps Grads Snare Top Salaries!!

September 26, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Georgia Tech University Midtown AtlantaSee on Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta Conversations and Condos

Among many folks who fixate on big-name northeastern liberal-arts schools, the Georgia Institute of Technology flies under the reputational radar. Even its president, G.P. Peterson, goes by the unassuming, guy-next-door nickname of “Bud.” But based on our Payback Score, the school deserves a higher profile — and some bragging rights. After all, it’s offering the best academic deal in America.

Recent Georgia Tech grads earn $59,000, or a stellar 67% of what they paid in tuition. Grads in their 30s average $102,000 a year, more than three times their 1990s tuition tab. Peterson says those imposing scores are no accident. Virtually all of Georgia Tech’s students are focused on science-oriented disciplines, including engineering and computer and software design. Those, of course, are the kinds of fields where the prospects and opportunities have remained strong even in this shaky economy. And then there’s the school’s status as a public university, which gives it access to taxpayer funds that have subsidized the cost of attendance, especially for in-state students. “We’re in a fortunate position,” says Peterson.
