To sprawl or not to sprawl? A Story about the Transportation Tax Vote

May 17, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Atlanta Transportation Tax VoteSee on Scoop.it – Other Atlanta News Events

In this article by Thomas Wheatley from Creative Loafing, he brings up some very, very interesting points. This transportation tax will be voted on in July, and when you look at the overall measure and how much money is still being pumped into road construction…..”For five years I’ve been practically begging to pay an extra tax to build sorely needed transit in metro Atlanta. Now that it’s a possibility, I wonder if the measure we’re being asked to consider this summer is really such a good idea.”

AAA — American Automobile Association

May 1, 2012 by Thom Abbott

AAAI’m a member of the American Automobile Association or as well all know it Triple A (AAA)! It’s simply the best $84 I spend!

The piece of mind, knowing that if my car or truck breaks down, they will be there to tow me to the nearest mechanic, or if here in Atlanta, they tow me directly to MY mechanic!  While I’m a happy customer of AAA, I’m not happy that they do not offer domestic partner benefits. I can’t add my partner, he has to pay for an entire membership on his own. Luckily, we are ususally together, so even if driving his car, we are covered.

The offer discounts on a variety of services….most I’ve never used. But when I do travel, I always search for a AAA hotel rate, and often times it’s the best deal to be had. Here’s some examples of discounts:

  • Atlanta Braves — Buy 1 Get 1 Free on Upper Box tickets
  • Denny’s Restaurant — Save 10% on Food and Nonalcoholic beverages (Does Denny’s SERVE alcohol?)
  • GAP Stores — Save 10% on all in-store purchase
  • Park ‘N Fly — Save 15% on off-airport parking
  • Mimis Cafe — Save 10% on food and nonalcoholic beverages

They also offer numerous other travel discounts based on the company, LOTS of discounts on Central Florida attractions, AND Insurance. They have also just opened 3 Car Car Centers here in the Atlanta area.

But by far, the towing service has been the feature I have always used. AAA. Money well spent!

Planned GA400 Interchange Wins Neighborhood Approval

April 30, 2011 by Thom Abbott

Have you ever tried to navigate the Lenox Road/Buford Highway/Sidney Marcus “triangle” on any given weekday morning or afternoon?

How about the Lindbergh/LaVista/Cheshire Bridge intersection? Does the term gridlock, crazy or avoid at all costs come to mind? Then you know exactly what it’s like to try and get from I-85 Southbound to GA400 Northbound or just the opposite!

Well, help is on the way! The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) held another public meeting this past week, and the neighbors who once threatened to fight to stop this proposed exit ramps have now given their blessing. After years and years of dealing with the congested streets and cars zipping through their neighborhood trying to dodge the mess, GDOT will begin construction of the two ramps.

I had always wondered what bozo designed this intersection and left these ramps off. But having spent a bit more time learning the history of GA400 and its construction (and the fights against it slicing right through Buckhead) I now understand why they focused more on just getting the road built and not so much on these ramps. That said, I think GDOT, and any other organization, past or present, have done some lame planning on the growth of Atlanta and did not have the foresight to see this need. But, that’s water under the bridge and also the subject of another post another time.

For now, we will soon (define soon as a few years of highway construction) we will no longer have to be dancing in the streets as we will be off them and on freeway exit ramps instead. Now, they built the I-85/GA316 interchange in like record time. Ya think you could do the same here?

For more about this story, read about it at the Buckhead Patch.

Gas Prices and Real Estate…How and When Will It Effect Us!

March 13, 2011 by Thom Abbott

Note: I originally wrote this post in May, 2008. Funny how things have a way of repeating themselves. It still makes sense to buy Midtown Atlanta Real Estate if you work in Midtown Atlanta, Downtown or parts of Buckhead…you can walk or ride the MARTA train to work!

I’ve been thinking about this post for a couple days. Then, when I saw the gas price at my local Quik Trip jump $.16 in just two days from $3.59 to $3.75, I said, “Self…we gotta do something about this. What is another question.”

Well….for one thing, we don’t go for any Sunday drives in our classic car anymore. (Actually she has other issues…but we won’t go there today!) But, I think she makes 10mpg, maybe……Sorry Wilma, you’re staying in the driveway for now.

Then, I read an interesting story on Yahoo this morning about a man who is not buying any gas for 31 days! Check out the story! He’s riding a bike 18 miles roundtrip to work! Good for him!

I actually have 3 cars, and a pickup. The convertible is not moving, I only use my truck once a week to pickup things, my Mercedes is not moving, and my Sonata is the only car that gets driven.

Buying  Midtown Atlanta Real Estate , or moving is not a decision that is made on a whim. But I have to wonder, what will it take for the real estate consumer to make a living change, and move closer to work. Atlanta now ranks #1 in the worst commuting times in the U.S. (Not a rank we are proud of…at least not me!) Will it take $6 a gallon gas to change people’s minds and the way we conduct our lives? Apparently NOT!

The New York Times ran an article last week on Gas Prices and Mass Transit! IN New York, the transit authority reported ridership up by more than 5% for the first 3 months of the year! Denver, out of all places, up 8% in the first 3 months!

Hmmm….that train is looking pretty good right about now!

But for us REALTORS, kinda hard to show property on a train, right? Well yes, but for someone like me that does mostly urban areas like Midtown Atlanta, I make a point to show my Buyers HOW CLOSE they are to a MARTA station!

As for my own personal use, I think twice about going to the office from my house (I have a condo which is walkable) unless I have to.

And you can bet, that Buyer is qualified before they get in the car and I show them any Midtown Atlanta Real Estate!

(Climb up on Soap Box)  Everyone should not buy gas for ONE DAY! Just ONE DAY! See what happens to the gas price. (Climb off Soap Box)

I’m thinking people will dump the SUV before they will sell their house. But then again, as I ride down the freeway with that SUV next to me with the New Car tag on it, I’m thinking….you don’t get it do you?

Gas Prices and Real Estate…it’s effecting us now, and for sometime to come!

Anyone want to go bike shopping with me? Or maybe a Moped?

Classic Car Commercials — The Heartbeat of America. Indeed!

March 12, 2011 by Thom Abbott

Classic Car Commercials — The Heartbeat of America. Indeed!

In college (ah geeez, there I go dating myself) my parents were about to “come into some money” with a sale of a portion of our family ranch in Montana. The sale never happened. (Well it did, just a few years later and for ALOT less money!)

But my Dad had said he would buy me one of these! I lived in Houston attending the Univeristy of Houston, and I even went and test drove one.

Heavy sigh! But memories are wonderful aren’t they? Now I could just see me touring Midtown Atlanta Real Estate in one of these babies!
