Food and Agricultural Giant Cargill Opens Midtown ATL Tech Hub

February 22, 2025 by Thom Abbott

Food Giant Cargill opens Midtown Atlanta Tech HubIn November 2024, Cargill, a global leader in food and agriculture, inaugurated its new tech hub in Midtown Atlanta, marking a significant milestone in the company’s digital transformation journey. This strategic move aims to harness Atlanta’s burgeoning tech scene and diverse talent pool to drive innovation in the food and agriculture sectors.

Strategic Location in Midtown’s Technology Square

Cargill’s decision to establish its tech hub in Midtown’s Technology Square places it at the heart of Atlanta’s innovation district. The company has subleased a portion of the NCR campus on Spring Street, providing a modern workspace designed to foster collaboration and technological advancement. This location offers proximity to leading academic institutions and a vibrant tech community, aligning perfectly with Cargill’s objectives.

Job Creation and Talent Acquisition

The Atlanta tech hub is set to create over 400 highly skilled jobs in the coming years, focusing on areas such as data engineering, generative artificial intelligence, and SAP. As of January 2025, Cargill has already onboarded approximately 50 employees, with many hailing from the local area. This recruitment drive underscores the company’s commitment to tapping into Atlanta’s rich pool of technical talent to drive its digital transformation efforts.

Leadership Perspectives

Brian Sikes, Cargill’s Board Chair and CEO, emphasized the strategic importance of the Atlanta hub, stating that Georgia’s business-friendly environment provides an ideal backdrop for the company’s investment in technology and innovation. Jennifer Hartsock, Chief Information and Digital Officer at Cargill, highlighted that the city’s thriving tech innovation ecosystem offers unparalleled access to expertise essential for advancing the company’s digital initiatives. Community Engagement and Future Outlook

Beyond job creation, Cargill has demonstrated a strong commitment to the local community, contributing over $1 million in the past year to support organizations such as the Georgia FFA Foundation, Georgia Mountain Food Bank, and local educational institutions. Looking ahead, the Atlanta tech hub is poised to play a pivotal role in developing digital solutions that enhance the global food supply chain, open new markets, and promote sustainability in the food system.

In summary, Cargill’s new tech hub in Midtown Atlanta signifies a strategic investment in technology and talent, reinforcing the company’s dedication to innovation and community partnership in the region.

Cargill employees will have numerous living options in the Midtown Atlanta area. Some may choose to rent in one of the luxury apartment buildings. Others may see the value in renting vs. buying

Those options can range from a Midtown Atlanta condo, many with in walking distance of the new office, or single family homes in areas like Brookhaven or  Chamblee. We are ready here at Thomas Ramon Group to help you find the perfect place to call home along with your new Cargill Tech Hub!

Embassy Suites Atlantic Station Moves Forward

May 23, 2018 by Thom Abbott

Once upon a time, lodging options in the Midtown area were pretty sparse. You either went luxury or almost nothing else. Fast forward to 2018, and you have numerous hotels to choose from, and several new options on the horizon. Embassy Suites Atlantic Station will be one of those new options.

Site of proposed Embassy Suites Atlantic StationEmbassy Suites Atlantic Station Moves Forward

Horizon Hospitality Management has filed a permit application with the City of Atlanta for a 10-story high rise building, next to The Atlantic Condominiums at 200 17th Street. The photo to the right shows what I think will be the location of the property, based on the renderings provided in an article at WhatnowAtlanta.com. There is a possibility the site could be next to the tennis courts that are alongside The Atlantic.

Details mention 175 rooms taking up some 145,020 square feet and potentially a “high end steakhouse” fronting 17th Street. Hmmmm…steak. Designed by Mike Clifford of the Atlanta-based firm of LPBC, the project could break ground later this year and be ready for guests by 2020. (Remember, 2000 and we thought how is that possible, and now we are talking about 2020!!!!)

While North of the campus, this hotel would be another option for guests and parents visiting Georgia Tech.

Below is a rending of the proposed Embassy Suites Atlantic Station, as well as a couple site photos I snapped today. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one!

Currently, the only other hotel at Atlantic Station is the Twelve Hotel.

The Mark at Atlanta Will Bring More Student Apartments to Midtown

November 15, 2017 by Thom Abbott

Student Housing The Mark at AtlantaAnother proposed apartment building will offer more off-campus apartments for students at Georgia Tech, and possibly SCAD. The Mark at Atlanta will eat up some more surface parking as well as three buildings.

Landmark Properties and City Life Development Partners have proposed a 28-story apartment building at the corner of Spring and 10th Streets. This is across the street from Hanover West Midtown (once upon a time the Checker’s Drive In Restaurant). This new site is a surface parking lot, Domino’s Pizza, a small old apartment building and a doctor’s office. (See Map elsewhere in this article)

The Mark at Atlanta will have 18 floors of residences, 9 levels of parking for 380 cars and street-level retail on 10th Street as well as Spring Street. (And people said nothing will happen on Spring Street…..yeah!)

This building will join SQ5 and University House that have already been built just South of this site…and further South, the under-construction The Standard. There is some market for student housing obviously in the Georgia Tech area.

Aqua Condos and The Mark at Atlanta
Aqua “04” Balconies on the left corner

While further from the SCAD campus, it might offer housing options for those students as well.

What will be challenging, is the residents that live in Aqua Condominiums, just next door. For those that own one of the “04” Stack on the West side of the building…their balconies will pretty much look right into this building! Yikes! But, I’ve always told condo buyers, that as long as there are vacant lots, or low-rise businesses on a site, they are prime to be taken for future development. And now we see it once again!

With Aqua being 25 stories, and the new building at 28, they will be neck and neck. The new site has slope to it, so the actual line-up between the two buildings remains to be seen.

The project came back through the Midtown Alliance’s Design Review Committee (DRC) on November 14, 2017. The notes from their second review of the project:

The Midtown Development Review Committee (DRC) saw a follow-up presentation for a student housing project proposed by CityLife Development Partners and Landmark Development. “The Mark at Atlanta” was presented previously in October and the committee requested more information related to the retail layout on 10th Street and the vehicular access and loading on Peachtree Place. They also recommended that the developer meet with residents of the adjacent condo tower, Aqua, to discuss concerns related to access and quality of life issues such as noise and site lines into the parking structure.  Since then, the development team made significant strides in addressing all identified concerns apart from the main sticking point involving a proposed curb cut on 10th Street. The DRC was not supportive of a variation to allow the curb cut on 10th Street due to the negative impact it would have on traffic flow along this corridor and the potential for traffic and pedestrian conflicts given its proximity to an existing curb cut on the adjacent property.  Further, 10th Street is viewed as a preferred location for retail and restaurant space and removing the curb cut allows more opportunity to activate the street level with those types of uses.  The committee recommended an alternative location for the curb cut on Spring Street. The development team is exploring this option and other modifications and intends to proceed with an electronic review before the end of the year.

CODA Building Breaks Ground in Midtown Atlanta

January 9, 2017 by Thom Abbott

Coda Technology Square Midtown AtlantaGeorgia Tech and Portman have broken ground on an exciting new addition to the GATech campus, particularly Tech Square and Midtown Atlanta. A forgotten corner at 4th and Spring Streets will eventually be home to the new high performance computing center.

The building will be 21-stories, and is incorporating the historic Crum & Forester Building that stands on the corner of Armstead Place and Spring Street. The name was shortened from the High Performance Computing Center to Coda. The developer hopes to finish the building in 2019.

Plans call for the building to be home to some 2,400 workers, including Tech researchers as well as staff and employees from private sector firms. The project is estimated to cost $375 million.

This section of Spring Street is finally seeing some changes after having been in the shadows of the rest of Midtown Atlanta. Across the street from Coda, is a new student housing building going up that is being built by developer Selig Enterprises. The GATech Hotel and Conference Center is just across Spring Street.

The entire complex will total about 1 million square feet. About 750,000 square feet will be office, retail and data center space. Georgia Tech will occupy and lease from Portman, who will own the tower, about half of the office floor space, while the rest will be leased to major companies and startups.

CODA Breaks Ground at Tech Square

Here is a short video from the Ground Breaking event in December, 2016.

There are certainly many living options nearby Coda for people looking to live in Midtown Atlanta that will be working in this building. Obviously it’s a couple years from delivery, but we will we watching and waiting to help new employees find place to live in Midtown Atlanta near Coda.

If There is a Vacant Lot Out Your Window, Buyer Beware!

January 7, 2017 by Thom Abbott

I love working with Buyers for condos in Midtown, Buckhead and other areas of the city! I think my knowledge is very helpful when they are trying to make a decision on where to live, and more specifically, which condo to buy.

As we are standing on a balcony, or looking out a window, I’m often asked, “What is going to happen with that vacant lot?” Ahhhh…..

If There is a Vacant Lot Out Your Window, Buyer Beware!

Hanover Midtown Apartment SiteAnytime there is either a vacant lot, or even a low rise building (say 6 stories or less) I caution a buyer that the view could most definitely change. In fact I always say, “You can NEVER guarantee the view.” (Now you know, you are never supposed to say never…but in this case……)

Unless a brand new building is there, or a high rise is already in place, there is always the potential that the view can change. Take this photo to the right…..it is taken off of a balcony at Viewpoint Midtown. That lot is at the corner of 7th and Juniper and runs up to Peachtree Street. It actually does not look like that anymore, as a 36-story apartment building is now under construction on that site! See what I mean!

Another case in point is in West Midtown at White Provision Condominiums. This building is not that tall, so certainly has the potential to have something rise in front of it. I’ve known that the area in front of the building on the corner of 14th and Howell Mill Road is owned by GATech. Well, it seems they may be ready to do something with it!

Georgia Tech Howell Mill Road

Georgia Tech is now looking for a developer for the 11 1/2 acre site where everything from a hotel, to apartments, office and retail space could rise! They have indicated they would like to include housing that is aimed at being affordable for junior faculty, grad students and others that might want to live near campus.

On the map above, the YELLOW star is the White Provision Condominium building. So, those facing Howell Mill with a nice skyline vista of Midtown proper…..well…..enjoy it while you can.

If There is a Vacant Lot Out Your Window, Buyer Beware!
