January 29, 2015 by Thom Abbott

Coca-Cola Enterprises Innovation Center Midtown AtlantaThe technology around the Georgia Institute of Technology…just keep growing! The area of Tech Square is for sure ‘ground zero’ for the tech industry in Atlanta!

Coca-Cola Enterprises to put innovation center at Georgia Tech

The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports that Coca-Cola Enterprises will have some 20 software developers in their new 5,000 sq. ft Innovation Center in the Centergy Building in Midtown at GATech.

CCE will work on new and emerging technologies for various retail customers that will help with everything from efficiency to increased sales.

While we don’t know WHERE these new software developers will be coming from, MyMidtownMojo.com is ready to help welcome them to Midtown Atlanta! If the urban life-style is their goal…they can live in Midtown and walk to work!

Keeping GATech safe

March 6, 2014 by Thom Abbott

See on Scoop.it – Georgia Tech News Events

Images flashed across 10 screens on the front wall.
There’s video of street action both in and around Georgia Tech’s campus. Take a look over there and you’ll see people walking along Fowler Street. Another screen shows action at the intersection of 10th Street and Hemphill Avenue.
Although the room feels like an air traffic control center, it’s really an enhanced operation center at the Georgia Tech Police Department (GTPD).

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

“The department installed 26 cameras along the major arteries leading into campus. This creates a video fence around the perimeter of campus and allows for a broader view of what’s going on in real-time, Deputy Chief Rob Connolly said.

“This is just another tool for us to keep the campus safe,” Connolly said.

In deciding where to place the cameras, GTPD reviewed prior incidents and access points to determine which locations would have the most impact. The department already has the ability to patrol more than 600 fixed building cameras scattered around campus.”

September 3, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Midtwon Buzz Hackathon September 13-14 2013You sort of expect “techie things” from Midtown, right?

I mean, after all, we are the home to Georgia Tech…and all kinds of cool stuff comes out of Georgia Tech.

So, why not have somebody create some really cool apps for your phone to help you live, work and enjoy Midtown Atlanta? Ahhhh….

Midtown Buzz Mobile Hackathon September 13-14, 2013 at Hypeotamus

Besides having easy-to-use apps to make Midtown Atlanta an even better place to live, work, and play, should we not  build them and win some really cool prizes at the same time?

The Midtown Buzz Mobile Hackathon is your chance to build cool apps and compete to win a free stay at the newly renovated Hyatt Midtown, gift certificates to amazing Midtown restaurants, and other goodies. Three prize categories await you:

  1. Wayfinder – enhance the visitor experience in Midtown as they live, work and play. What are some cool local sites, shops, tours, and other things that make Midtown unique?
  2. Transportation – make it easeir to travel around Midtown, by foot, bike, or automobile. Where are the bike racks?  What is my easiest route through the MARTA stations? What are my parking options?
  3. Wildcard – propose your own idea or grab some from the idea bank.

Midtown Alliance, Georgia Tech’s Institute for People and Technology, and Hypepotamus are proud to announce the Midtown Buzz Mobile Hackathon, the latest in their collaborative initiative to expand and strengthen Midtown’s flourishing Innovation District.

The Midtown Buzz Mobile Hackathon is the launch event of a six-month initiative to build connected mobile applications to improve and enhance the Midtown experience. All the teams participating (and new teams who emerge along the way) will have the chance to continue their work after the launch hackathon to vie for an even bigger prizes to be awarded in January to those who successfully release their apps to the market.

I might just have to stop in on this event to see who is there, and what comes out of it!

Georgia Tech Off Campus Housing |Can We Still Buy A Midtown Atlanta Condo?

August 4, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Georgia Tech

Last week, we just closed on another Midtown Atlanta condo for Georgia Tech Parents that chose Georgia Tech Off Campus Housing for their GATech student. We realize that every family and every budget is different. You may be able to spend more for the newer, modern high rises that are within walking distance to Technology Square and the rest of the campus. But some parents ask us, “Are there good investments that we can still make and not spend a fortune?”   Yes there is.

Georgia Tech Off Campus Housing |Can We Still Buy A Midtown Atlanta Condo?

Cornerstone Village Midtown Atlanta 2011 SalesThe answer to that question is a guarded “yes.”

An example of a Midtown Atlanta condominium community that is close to GATech and still affordable is Cornerstone Village. This community is comprised of 4 buildings, two which are historic and two that are newer construction. Most Georgia Tech parents desire to purchase a two bedroom so that their son or daughter can have a room mate who in turn helps make your mortgage payment.  As of this post writing, there is only ONE 2-bedroom listed in the building!

But let’s back up a bit and look at the sales history in the building so you can see where we were, and where we are headed!

Cornerstone Village took a hard hit in the real estate slide of 2009-2011. There were many foreclosures, but despite those, the homeowners association has remained strong, and kept the community financially stable. But from 2011 and forward, the prices have risen dramatically at Cornerstone Village, especially in the 1 bedroom homes. The chart to the left, shows the sale for 2011 in the building.  Yes, you could of bought a condo in Midtown Atlanta for $50,000-60,000!!!

But now, fast forward to 2013. Times have changed indeed. A smaller (635 sq. ft) home just closed for $124,000!! How’s THAT for a return on your investment! Below, the chart on the left shows the current Active Listings, Under Contract and Short Sales that are Under Contract. The chart on the right shows the homes sold so far in 2013.

Cornerstone Village 2013 Sales Activity

The Question: “Can We Still Buy A Midtown Atlanta Condo?”  And the guarded “yes” answer…prices have risen dramatically and this could continue, or start to slow down significantly with the rise in interest rates. There certainly is limited inventory, which could help to keep the prices moving upwards.

Either way, now is the time to make your decision about Georgia Tech Off Campus housing. I’m also often asked about leasing the condo out. Currently the building does not have any leasing permits available, and the wait list is probably around 4+ years before you would clear it and obtain a leasing permit. That said, if you did purchase now, have your son/daughter attend school for 4 years (or take the 6 year plan like I did!) you very well may, I repeat may clear the leasing permit list. I can tell you from a rental standpoint, that Cornerstone Village is an easy building to rent! One bedrooms rent for $1100-1200 and two bedroom comand $1600 and up, depending on the floor plan.

Georgia Tech Parents and Off Campus Housing. YES, you can still buy a Midtown Atlanta condo at Cornerstone Village!! If you are looking to make a Midtown Atlanta condo purchase, or need more information about the Georgia Tech Off Campus Housing options available, please complete the form below and we will be in contact with you!

If you answered No to this question, Please click on the Preferred Vendor list Above once you have completed this form. There you will find contact information and links to our recommended Mortgage Lenders.

Georgia TechSee on Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta Conversations and Condos

THE FLATS – The home of Georgia Tech football for a century, Historic Grant Field will celebrate its 100th anniversary this fall.

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

I’ve lived in ATL much longer than I’m going to say, because I’ve never made it to a Tech game….yet!! Maybe THIS is the season to change that??
