Twitter Builds a Bigger Bird House In Atlanta

December 8, 2012 by Thom Abbott

I can remember when I FIRST got on Twitter in Atlanta! It was already a big thing on the West Coast. I searched for people to follow, and there were like 300 people in Atlanta. REALLY!!!! How Big is Twitter in ATL now?

Twitter Takes 100,000 sq. ft. in Downtown Atlanta Data Center

The expanded bird house (a.k.a. data center expansion) will cost upwards of $300 million in facility build out and servers, computers and other electronic equipment, according to The Atlanta Business Chronicle.

In October 2011, Twitter took 50,000 square feet in the data center, located at 1033 Jefferson Street. This expansion will triple Twitter’s footprint in the 1-million sq. ft data center.

Now, as a real estate broker, I’m all about location, especially when it comes to describing where someplace is. The Atlanta Business Chronicle article references this data center in DOWNTOWN Atlanta. I’m thinking….1 MILLION sq.ft in Downtown….WHAT building would that be?

Ah, my good friend and trusty helper, Mr. Google Maps gave me a different persepective. The Data Center is actually located WEST of the Georgia Tech Campus and close to the King Plow Arts Center. I’d be a bit more inclined to call that Midtown West, don’t you think?

Whatever the case, Atlanta is a bigger technology hub than most people realize! Two of the country’s largest fiber routes interconnect in metro Atlanta, resulting in a built-in, high-tech ecosystem for data centers, creating the Southeast’s largest concentration of telecom companies. Google, Hewlett Packard have a presence here. Companies such as Advanced Micro Devices and ByteGrid are opening data centers in Suwanee and Alpharetta.

Where is Main Street in Atlanta? Do You Know?

November 17, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Where Is Main Street in Atlanta GAIf you’ve lived in Atlanta for more than a week, you know that Atlanta is all about naming streets Peachtree Something.

But, Where is Main Street in Atlanta? Do You Know?

The street naming in Atlanta gets downright confusing….are we on Peachtree Street, Peachtree Road, Peachtree Industrial Blvd, or Peachtree Parkway? (That is how many times Peachtree Street, leaving Downtown Atlanta changes names as it heads North all the way to Cumming!)

So, I’m going through a Google Alert (stick we me on this train of thought so you can see how I got here….) The Alert leads me to a post about a GATech fraternity that’s in trouble, to health scores on restaurants, that leads me to a post at Midtown Patch about a perfect score for Five Guys Burgers. Ok, I’m thinking the location at Spire Midtown Atlanta. But no, they reference the “Main Street Five Guys Burgers and Fries located just north of Midtown.”

But Where is Main Street, Just North of Midtown?

Well, a couple of clicks later…I found it. It’s the Five Guys Burgers located at Lindbergh Center and the Lindbergh MARTA Station. WOW! Really? It took me some 3- 5 clicks to find something I should of found on the FIRST post, if they would of called it Five Guys Burgers Lindbergh Center.

In real estate, I often see a  s-t-r-e-t-c-h in describing where a home may be located. But, in reality, if you just say where it ACTUALLY is located, you will probably be much further ahead in people finding your home For Sale or your burger restaurant.

Ten 10th Street Faces Loan Troubles

September 9, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Ten 10th Street Loan Facing DefaultWhile we all like to hear good news, it’s important to keep it all in perspective. And loan problems are not just faced by residential home owners. Commercial properties have their challenges too.

The Atlanta Business Chronicle reported this week that Ten 10th Street has a $71.4 Million loan secured by the 13-story building, known as Millennium in Midtown (I don’ t think I ever knew that was the name of it!) which has been transferred to mortgage servicing .

The building faces financial challenges after it lost its anchor tenant, PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP to 1075 Peachtree (12th and Midtown). The story says it will take up to $7 Million to release the space! Yikes!

Another prominent tenant is Google which occupies 32,000 sq ft. on a lease that is set to expire in 2013.

The building was built ten years ago, banking on office space demand for the telecom boom. When PricewaterhouseCoopers moved 800+ people in then, it was a deal that gave Midtown a boost. And it looks like it needs another boost.

Ten 10th Street is located at the corner of 10th and West Peachtree Streets, across from Aqua Condominiums.

Report: Police Raid Area Food Trucks

August 25, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Where to Find Food Truck Locations in AtlantaSee on Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta Conversations and Condos

Five trucks were issued citations Wednesday in Virginia Highland.

Now mind you, I understand that for the health and well-being of the public, we have to have some rules. Otherwise, it would be a free-for-all out there. I’m not sure of the cost of these permits, but I’d think a Food Truck could be issued a permit say, every three months, and it covers any location where the truck is going to work.

I can only imagine the nightmare of being in 4 or 5 places in one week, and needing 4 or 5 permits? Come on ATL, let’s make doing business in ATL easy, not harder.
