Georgia Sales Tax Holiday is HERE! August 10-11, 2012

August 10, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Georgia Sales Tax Holiday Save Money Buying School supplies and clothesThe State of Georgia has returned the Sales Tax Holiday for August 10-11, 2012.

What Items Are Exempt From Sales Tax

  •         Clothing and footwear with a sales price of $100.00 or less per item
  •         A single purchase, with a sales price of $1,000.00 or less, of personal computers and personal computer- related accessories
  •         General school supplies to be used in the classroom or in classroom-related activities with a sales price of $20.00 or less per item.

The exemption does not apply to:

Clothing accessories, jewelry, handbags, umbrellas, eyewear, watches, watchbands, cellular devices, furniture, computer-related  accessories designed for recreational use, items used in a trade or business or for resale, or rentals; or
Sales in theme parks, entertainment complexes, public lodging establishments, restaurants, or airports.

So, now would be a great time to get out and get some clothes for the kids, or yourself for that matter. (I’m seeing some new shoes!) as well as general school supplies. My office supplies are pretty stocked up, but I’ll be looking to see what I might save a few pennies on since I won’t have to pay the sales tax!

Happy Georgia Sales Tax Holiday!

Midtown Atlanta soars after 1996 Summer Olympics – News

August 1, 2012 by Thom Abbott

See on Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta Conversations and Condos

Midtown Atlanta with Spire Midtown and Viewpoint MidtownATLANTA — The legacy of the 1996 Games is always a source for spirited debate. Is Atlanta better off? Or worse?

We are bigger, more sophisticated and we possess a skyline we didn’t have before.

Perhaps the most lasting imprint on the city is Midtown and its metamorphosis into something big and grand.

“There is no question, I think Midtown is the center of gravity where the city is both north and south,” Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said. “I think it was due in large part to the Olympics.”

Mayor Reed grew up here. He remembers Midtown the way it was 30-plus years ago.

“When I was a boy, the most important thing was the Gorin’s Ice Cream on that corner. That’s gone and there are skyscrapers there,” he said.

And many of the skyscrapers in Midtown were put there by one man, his vision and his money — the former Georgia Tech quarterback John Dewberry.

“While the light shined brightest in Downtown during the Olympics, it certainly had an effect on Midtown,” said the Milton High School graduate.

John Dewberry is Atlanta’s most prominent real estate developer and CEO of Dewberry Capital Corp. His investments total more than $1 billion since the 1996 Games. He has reshaped how we see the city on many different levels.

“I saw Midtown as a place that not only had landscaping with parks and neighborhoods, but also had the nexus of commercial development where international companies would locate,” he said.

Atlanta Dogwood Festival — April 20-22, 2012 Midtown Atlanta

April 9, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Traditions are a wonderful thing in life. Be they certain holiday decorations, or an annual family gathering, or……The 76th Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival!

Atlanta Dogwood Festival April 20-22, 2012

As the number 76 implies, this Atlanta Festival has been a mainstay in the festival “circuit” as you will. It usually announces the arrival of Spring in Atlanta, although this year Mother Nature has one-uped the Festival as our trees are fully leafed out…and the temperature’s play with the 80’s already in late March. But, the weekend of of April 20-22, 2012 will see some 200,000 people parade through Midtown Atlanta’s Backyard….Piedmont Park.

Dogwood Festival Piedmont Park April 20-22, 2012The Atlanta Dogwood Festival website still has the 2011 Map on it, so while we have included it here as a reference, it might be wise to check again if you are looking for something in particular. However, the Piedmont Park Conservancy, the organization charged with running and maintaining the park has pretty strict guidelines on what can be where, so you can be pretty safe in knowing the Food Vendors will be where the Food Vendors have been, and the concert will be where the concert has been.  Speaking of concerts….Roberta Flack!!! FREE! Awesome!

Speaking of Food Vendors, if you long for a bit more of “sit down, people watch and have a drink” kind of lunch, there are three very close options to the Park itself. The Nook is located at the 14th Street Entrance.  At the 12th Street Entrance, you’ll find Willy’s and The Parq. All 3 offer patio dining to take in the sights, sounds and the weather. But if you head further into Midtown Atlanta you’ll find my favorite home away from home, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant on Peachtree, between 6th and 7th Streets.

I have to say, I’ve never purchased any art at the festival. Not for not wanting to, but usually my wallet seemed to have an empty spot where the cash should be. But I always get great ideas for “someday….” Hopefully, you will find that special piece of art or painting or drawing you’ve been looking for to put on the wall or display in your Midtown Atlanta condo….or where ever you may live.

Welcome To Midtown Atlanta and the 76th Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival, April 20-22, 2012

Mingle in Midtown and Shining Light Walk – Tuesday, March 20 7-10PM

March 17, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Living in an urban area always requires you to be aware of your surroundings. It’s just a simple fact. Heck, I do it even in the burbs! I’m always watching if someone is walking behind me, close to me,standing around, etc. And it’s great to see when a neighborhood comes together for safety. Well, and an adult beverage can’t hurt, right? Welcome Midtown Neighbors’ Association’s (MNA) Mingle in Midtown and Shining Light Walk! This edition will take place THIS Tuesday, March 20 from 7-10pm at Cypress Pint and Plate, located at 6th and Cypress streets, just behind Cornerstone Village and Spire Midtown!

My friend and owner, Billy from Cypress Pint and Plate will do his usual finest with munchies and drink specials. Then, at 7:30pm the 2nd Shining Light Walk will commence. Beginning at 7:30 (not much time for an adult beverage…I’d arrive at 6:30pm myself) the walk will head to Myrtle Street, 4th Street and then back to Cypress Pint and Plate.

Midtown Atlanta Real EstateThis type of event is designed for a couple of reasons. One, to bring the neighbors out of their condos and cottages of Midtown Atlanta to meet and two, to show anyone thinking about commiting a crime in Midtown Atlanta that you’re being watched!

I’ll be there and look forward to seeing you all there as well. Be sure to say Hello!

Bank of America Plaza sold at foreclosure sale for $235M | 11alive.com

Bank Of America Tower Sells in Foreclosure AuctionVia Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta News Events

Midtown Atlanta Landmark Building Sells in Foreclosure Auction for $235M!

The Bank of America Building (pictured here with spire on top) was sold at a courthouse forecloure auction for almost HALF of it’s purchase price in 2006!

Of course, the sale does not affect B of A, as they do not own the building. To bad…it would kind of serve them right to have the tables turned on them for once!

Midtown Social Club Returns To Midtown Atlanta!

January 31, 2012 by Thom Abbott

It seems like it HAS been a long time since the Midtown Social Club held and event. This group was first formed by residents of several Midtown Atlanta condo buildings. It quickly took off, and the club was in demand, if you will, buy Midtown restaurants to host this event.

I’m certainly looking forward to the event and hope to see you there as well!
