Time Restaurant to Replace Straits at 5th and Juniper

November 25, 2014 by Thom Abbott

Buckhead Bottle Bar Moves to MidtownIt looks like someone else if going to try and make a go of it at this challenged restaurant corner!

Time (formerly a.k.a. Buckhead Bottle Bar) is going to be moving into the space at the corner of 5th and Juniper. The last try, Straits did not do so well. It may be the location, or maybe no one has found the right combination for that space. And it always faces a challenge being so close to the residential townhomes that dot both sides of 5th Street between Juniper and Piedmont.

Time Restaurant(s) as they say (and what does that actually mean) Facebook Page gives no indication as to when the new space will open.

We’ll be watching to see what happens!

Super Shuttle Arrives in Midtown Atlanta

November 15, 2014 by Thom Abbott

Super Shuttle Midtown AtlantaWe all know that living in Midtown Atlanta and traveling are a nice combination! Why? Well first off, we have THREE MARTA stations to pick from to use for mass transit to the Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. (Think we can make that name any longer?)

But, not everyone wants  to take the train. Maybe you are leaving early, early, or coming in late, late. Well now you will have another shuttle service option with the Atlanta arrival of Super Shuttle. The service will start on Monday, November 17 and will service Downtown, Midtown and Buckhead initially. (Sorry you OTP peeps….out of luck…for now.)

A check of the website shows an Airport-to-Midtown one way fare at $18.50. That is for a “shared-ride van” which means there could be stops before you get to your Midtown Atlanta condo. When I used to travel on business and did not need or want a rental car, I used Super Shuttle and it always worked well.

It just nice to know you have options, from MARTA, Uber and Super Shuttle to get to the airport. Oh, and there is a cab…..

athenahealth Moves into Ponce City Marketplace

October 4, 2014 by Thom Abbott

Ponce City Market Hard Hat TourEarlier this week, the first tenant at the long awaited opening of the Ponce City Market moved into their offices!

athenahealth Moves into Ponce City Marketplace

Way back ( certainly over a year ago) I had the opportunity to tour the building as Jamestown was working to turn the building from awful to awesome…which they have. That’s where this photo on the right came from!

But this week, the space is starting to buzz as Watertown, MA-based athenahealth — a health IT company —  unveiled their  new 60,000-square-foot home inside the brick building . Initially, some  200 employees will occupy the space, but growth plans call for up to 600 people and double the space to 120,000 sq.ft within the next 5 years.

athenahealth employees will enjoy the awesome location of Ponce City Market next to the Beltline! Just across the street they’ll find Whole Foods and other stores! But from a living standpoint athenahealth employees will have some great options between Midtown Atlanta condos, apartments in the immediate area of The Market and quaint homes in the Virginia-Highland area.

We look forward to helping these new arrivals discover all that Midtown Atlanta has to offer, both for fun but for living as well!

Here is a link to the story in Curbed Atlanta with pictures of the new space. (We did not want to “borrow” photos we did not have permission to use…so check out the story and the space….pretty cool place to work for sure!

Could The Atlanta Civic Center Become a Film and Television Center?

August 10, 2014 by Thom Abbott

It’s been languishing there for sometime…with quite the name to follow….Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center LocationAtlanta Civic Center. But times have changed since 1967. I remember going to see the Lion King here and would miss much of the show because if you did not have a dead center seat, the show was off to the side.

Now, imagine….Film and television studios surrounded by a performing arts center, a hotel, along with residential, office and retail could transform the downtown Civic Center property into a regional tourist destination. The site is actually in what is often called no-mans land, since the Downtown CID and the Midtown CID don’t cover the area.

But the location certainly IS close enough to draw off either visitors/residents of Midtown Atlanta as well as visitors in the Downtown Atlanta area attending conventions and visiting other tourist attractions like the Football Hall of Fame, World of Coke and the Aquarium.

The city is in the initial process of getting a real estate broker in place and issuing a RFP (request for proposal) as to what the site could be turned into.

In the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Carter is the one proposing such an exciting change to the site.

Bob Peterson, Carter’s chairman and CEO, said the firm is putting together a team that specializes in entertainment-oriented developments and movie-television production facilities. “The idea of studios with pre-production and post-production facilities, live TV and live audiences is not unique, but seeing that conceptually in Atlanta is new,” Peterson said.

Carter officials have had “a number of conversations” with a potential studio operator that he described as capable, reputable and financially sound.

The potential redevelopment of such a site (some 19 acres in fact) just shows there is still room for some exciting projects to come to live in Midtown Atlanta and the surrounding area. Keep in mind, the Civic Center MARTA station will also help this be a transit-oriented development…something we certainly need in Atlanta.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this project for sure!

Where Can I Buy Furniture for My Midtown Atlanta Condo | IKEA

July 20, 2014 by Thom Abbott

Where Can I Buy Furniture for My Midtown Atlanta Condo | IKEA

IKEA Atlanta at Atlantic StationCongratulations! You’ve closed on your new Midtown Atlanta condo, and you are moving in. As you moved out of that old rental apartment, you started to toss! I mean, I’ve got a new place! I want NEW stuff! I want it to be stylish and cool and you know….

Which probably means that old couch and maybe a recliner…they did not make the cut for the moving van! So now the question is, Where Can I Buy Furniture for My Midtown Atlanta Condo? We will look at numerous options in the Midtown area…and beyond. But let’s start with a close favorite….IKEA!  The Atlanta IKEA store is located alongside Atlantic Station off of 17th Street!

The IKEA concept comes from the idea of providing home furnishings that are affordable. If you’ve ever purchased anything at IKEA, you know the one way the keep costs down is to have you assemble the furniture yourself. Hence, you will see much of the items in big flat boxes. If the assembly gig is not for you, never fear. They now even have a service that will come and do the work at your condo for you!

IKEA AtlantaI’m not going to dish them, but I have purchased some items that did not hold up well, and others that are outstanding. My office desks/tables are all from IKEA! I once managed a corporate condo that was almost entirely furnished from IKEA…as you can see, it looked pretty nice!

But you can truly furnish your entire condo from this store! From silverware in the kitchen to towels in the bathroom, you can get most everything you need here. I’ve never purchased a bed from here, so I can’t speak for them. One thing I like about most of their furniture is its clean, simple lines. That big pillow sofa that your parents gave you may have fit in the apartment, but may not work well in your condo space. The furniture here is just designed to work well in the kind of space you get in a Midtown Atlanta condo!

If you are going to visit IKEA, here is the number one piece of advice I can give you….

DO NOT GO TO THE STORE ON A SATURDAY OR SUNDAY. EVER!

IKEA stores are known to draw from a wide geographic area. Look at this map of where stores are in relation to Atlanta…

IKEA STORES NEAR ATLANTA

The Atlanta store draws from Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee! So it’s a weekend destination! The store will be crowed, the parking lot packed, and the lines…..UGH!

You live locally, so take advantage of evening visits! Walk the store, get your ideas and either buy them then, or make a return visit, but just NOT on Saturday or Sunday. If you have a weekday off, stop by the IKEA restaurant for a breakfast special to fuel you for the store.

Why? If you’ve never been to an IKEA, they are HUGE! But the store is well laid out with displays that lead you through all the parts of the home. Everything is labeled, and you find most of it in the IKEA Marketplace, on the lower level. Furniture is found in the self-service area past the Marketplace and before you check out.

IKEA Atlanta! A perfect answer to the question, Where Can I Buy Furniture for My Midtown Atlanta Condo?
