Midtown Buzz Mobile Hackathon | September 13-14, 2013

September 3, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Midtwon Buzz Hackathon September 13-14 2013You sort of expect “techie things” from Midtown, right?

I mean, after all, we are the home to Georgia Tech…and all kinds of cool stuff comes out of Georgia Tech.

So, why not have somebody create some really cool apps for your phone to help you live, work and enjoy Midtown Atlanta? Ahhhh….

Midtown Buzz Mobile Hackathon September 13-14, 2013 at Hypeotamus

Besides having easy-to-use apps to make Midtown Atlanta an even better place to live, work, and play, should we not  build them and win some really cool prizes at the same time?

The Midtown Buzz Mobile Hackathon is your chance to build cool apps and compete to win a free stay at the newly renovated Hyatt Midtown, gift certificates to amazing Midtown restaurants, and other goodies. Three prize categories await you:

  1. Wayfinder – enhance the visitor experience in Midtown as they live, work and play. What are some cool local sites, shops, tours, and other things that make Midtown unique?
  2. Transportation – make it easeir to travel around Midtown, by foot, bike, or automobile. Where are the bike racks?  What is my easiest route through the MARTA stations? What are my parking options?
  3. Wildcard – propose your own idea or grab some from the idea bank.

Midtown Alliance, Georgia Tech’s Institute for People and Technology, and Hypepotamus are proud to announce the Midtown Buzz Mobile Hackathon, the latest in their collaborative initiative to expand and strengthen Midtown’s flourishing Innovation District.

The Midtown Buzz Mobile Hackathon is the launch event of a six-month initiative to build connected mobile applications to improve and enhance the Midtown experience. All the teams participating (and new teams who emerge along the way) will have the chance to continue their work after the launch hackathon to vie for an even bigger prizes to be awarded in January to those who successfully release their apps to the market.

I might just have to stop in on this event to see who is there, and what comes out of it!

GATech Opens New Basketball Arena

October 13, 2012 by Thom Abbott

You’ve seen the workers, and the construction fencing and the renditions. But the Real McCoy has finally arrived!

Season Ticket Holders to GATech basketball got the first glimpse of the new McCamish Pavilion where both Men’s and Women’s basketball will return next month. The Men’s first game is November 9, followed by the Women’s on November 11.

I’ll be trying to get an inside scoop when I attend a game in the near future, but until then, take a peek at the new home of GATech basketball!

Atlanta Police To Discuss Redrawing Patrol Zones

March 1, 2011 by Thom Abbott

Police Car LightsPolice protection is something many of us probably take for granted. But probably because we have never had a specific need to call the police. But when you call you want them there, and you want them there quick.

Such is the reasoning for the Atlanta Police Department to hold a series of community meetings to discuss redrawing  the boundaries of the 6 patrol zones to ensure the fastest response times and to maximize police resources, according to Police Chief George Turner.

There will continue to be six patrol zones. Twelve additional “beats” will be added within those zones. A beat is a geographic area to which one patrolling officer is assigned per shift. There currently are 66 beats in the city of Atlanta.

The public meeting for Zone 5 which includes Midtown, Atlantic Station, Ansley Park, Sherwood Forest, Home Park and a portion of West Midtown) will be held March 30 at the Atlanta Civic Center‘s Piedmont Room, 395
Piedmont Ave. at  7:00 p.m.

Residents should make a point of attending this public meeting to learn more about this proposal, how it will impact Midtown Atlanta and voice your opinions.

Here is a map of the current Zone 5:
