April 23, 2013 by Thom Abbott

MNA Midtown Neighbor's AssociationIf you don’t live in Midtown Atlanta, you might not think of it as anything more than a bunch of high rise buildings. But, there is a vibrant community of people that not only work in Midtown, but LIVE in Midtown Atlanta! You need to meet the people that live here (or around you if you already live there) and one way to do that is the Midtown Neighbors’ Association Community Leaders Social!

This event is one of the monthly Mingle in Midtown social events that MNA hosts, but this one has a special twist. On May 15th, from 6-8:30pm, you also have the opportunity to meet your Community Leaders, such as police, fire and Atlanta City Council. Who know’s maybe the Mayor will pass by….it is an election year after all!

Midtown Neighbors’ Association Community Leaders Social will take place on Wednesday, May 15th from 6-8:30pm at the NEW location of Cafe Intermezzo, located at the corner of 11th and Peachtree Streets, next to the Loews’ Midtown Atlanta Hotel!

Dogwood Festival – Piedmont Park April 19-21, 2013

April 19, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Yeah! It’s Spring in Midtown Atlanta and that means one thing — The Dogwood Festival!

Dogwood Festival April 19-21If you’ve never attended this premiere Atlanta festival, you have no idea what you are missing! From incredible artists of all types, to people watching to beer drinking (more on that in a moment) to food vendors. It’s what a festival in Piedmont Park is all about!

Be sure to get all the details you need at the Dogwood Festival website here! If you are planning on buying art, maybe you’ll want to have your car handy? But if it’s more about people watching and browsing, then MARTA is the way to go! Exit at the 10th Street station and look for the info signs directing you to Piedmont Park.

I’ll be in the park tonight helping a great cause — Midtown Ponce Security Alliance (MPSA) to raise money for security patrols in Midtown!

As we have for the last few years, we will staff a beverage booth at the Dogwood Festival. Proceeds from the beverage booth will go toward patrol hours, and this event always generates a nice boost to our patrol budget. We know you will be thirsty at times, so be sure to stop by our booth near the 14th Street entrance to Piedmont Park.

We will be there Friday (Noon to 7:30pm), Saturday (10:00 to 7:30pm),  and Sunday (10:00am to 7:30pm).  Come by and buy a beverage from a neighbor and make a donation to MPSA!

We will be there Friday (Noon to 7:30pm), Saturday (10:00 to 7:30pm),  and Sunday (10:00am to 7:30pm).  And many thanks to the neighbors who will staff this great source of patrol money!

So come on down to Midtown Atlanta, The Dogwood Festival and Piedmont Park..and be sure to stop by and buy a beer from ME!

It’s the Holiday Season in Midtown Atlanta! And what better way to have fun with family and friends than a good round of ice skating!

Black Friday Bash at Atlantic Station| November 23, 2012 2-9pm

November 20, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Atlantic StationFinally, something about the Thanksgiving holiday that is not what time the stores will open or what are you eating! How about a concert in Central Park with the Jam Out at Black Friday Bash @ Atlantic Station!

What Is Atlantic Station?

If you’ve just landed in Atlanta for the holiday weekend, or just have not ventured ITP (Inside The Perimeter) from the burbs of Atlanta, Atlantic Station is one of the most successful brownfield redevelopments in the country! (The name comes from the Atlantic Steel Mill which use to occupy this site.) Now, Atlantic Station is an almost model live-work-play community located across the Downtown Connector from Midtown Atlanta proper. ( Exit 17th Street via I-85/75 North or South to get to Atlantic Station)

Some 45 merchants and restaurants await you when visiting Atlantic Station. The list (and their hours of operation on Black Friday are below!)

Who Will Be Performing at Black Friday Bash?

Some great groups will be on hand to entertain from 2pm until 9pm!

You Said There were some 45 Merchants at Atlantic Station?

Yes…I did…and it even kind of surprised ME!

Atlantic Station Stores and Shops

I just might be dancing on the streets and in the Park! Hope to see you there!

Taste Of Atlanta – October 5-7, 2012 — A Midtown Atlanta Event!

September 23, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Hungry? Like checking out restaurants? Then why not check out E-I-G-H-T-Y, yes I said 80 of Atlanta’s BEST restaurants at Taste of Atlanta October 5-7, 2012 in Midtown Atlanta!

Midtown Atlanta Events | Taste of Atlanta October 5-7, 2012

This exciting culinary and social experience “takes over” Technology Square as well as parts of Spring Street for a 3 day festival celebrating one of Atlanta’s best known features….FOOD! Restaurants are a big thing in Atlanta. I don’t know if the stat is still the same, but I once heard that the average Atlantan spends over half of their monthly food budget in restaurants. Wow!

I can’t even begin to touch on a list of 80 restaurants that will be participating in Taste of Atlanta…that is mind-boggling to me! But, it’s an incredible event (or so I’ve heard…I’ve yet to make it…but I think that will change this year!)

A word to the wise….if you live outside of Midtown Atlanta, use the limited mass transit we DO have, and take MARTA. You can exit at the Midtown Station, and you are just a couple blocks from the action!

Come on out, and sample the culinary delights of Atlanta at Taste of Atlanta! And scope out Midtown Atlanta while you are here! It’s a pretty cool place to live when you have these kinds of events in your back yard!

Click on the picture to head to Taste of Atlanta’s website where you can purchase tickets, get a list of the participating restaurants, and more info about the event!

The Midtown Neighborhood Festival Impact – Crank Up The Music

September 21, 2012 by Thom Abbott

See on Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta Conversations and Condos

Music Midtown September 21-22, 2012Music Midtown 2012 is virtually here as tens of thousands of music-loving fans will be pouring into Piedmont Park on Friday and Saturday. It’s an exciting event featuring some very popular musical acts, but not everyone is whistling a happy tune.

There are concerned residents from neighborhoods that surround the park who wonder why Midtown must bear the burden in order for the rest of metro Atlanta and visitors to party during a string of spring, summer and fall festivals and events staged in and near the park.

Some contend it’s just part of the deal that comes with living in Midtown. Still, others want to insure that Midtown and Piedmont Park doesn’t get taken advantage of. Piedmont Park Conservancy (PPC) Director of Public Relations & Marketing Aimedra Kelley wrote in an email to Midtown Patch:
“Piedmont Park does not benefit from events like Music Midtown. Even though Piedmont Park hosts 85 percent of all permitted events in the City of Atlanta, there is no direct funding from those events supporting Piedmont Park Conservancy’s effort to maintain the Park. All of the funds raised from Conservancy events like Season of Magic, The Green Concert and more directly support the care and continued maintenance of Piedmont Park.”

The City does receive financial compensation from Live Nation Entertainment, which produces Music Midtown. According to City of Atlanta Special Events Coordinator Adrienne Wright, the City receives $250,000, plus $1 for each ticket that is sold that is contributed to Mayor Kasim Reed’s Centers of Hope initiative, which helps fund recreation centers and after-school activities for young people in the city, including upgrades to computer labs, security and other IT needs.

As is the case with all gated, ticketed events at Piedmont Park, it is up to the promoter to repair any damage sustained by the park, including turf damage. This year, the base of the two Music Midtown stages will have been in place for a full week before they’re removed.
