Midtown Neighbors’ Association Community Leader Social | October 10, 2012

October 9, 2012 by Thom Abbott

I’ve always been a firm believer that you should be involved in your community. If you live in a single family home, it might be your neighborhood association. If your home is located within a particular city (Smyrna, Dunwoody, Doraville, etc) then attend your City Council and Planning Commission meetings. (You will be BLOWN AWAY by actually watching government at work!)

If you live in Midtown Atlanta, then tomorrow is a great event for you to attend. The Midtown Neighbors’ Association Community Leader Social. It will be held at Escorpion Tequlia Bar and Cantina, located at 5th and Peachtree Street in Cornerstone Village Condominiums.

I look forward to seeing you all there!

Taste Of Atlanta – October 5-7, 2012 — A Midtown Atlanta Event!

September 23, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Hungry? Like checking out restaurants? Then why not check out E-I-G-H-T-Y, yes I said 80 of Atlanta’s BEST restaurants at Taste of Atlanta October 5-7, 2012 in Midtown Atlanta!

Midtown Atlanta Events | Taste of Atlanta October 5-7, 2012

This exciting culinary and social experience “takes over” Technology Square as well as parts of Spring Street for a 3 day festival celebrating one of Atlanta’s best known features….FOOD! Restaurants are a big thing in Atlanta. I don’t know if the stat is still the same, but I once heard that the average Atlantan spends over half of their monthly food budget in restaurants. Wow!

I can’t even begin to touch on a list of 80 restaurants that will be participating in Taste of Atlanta…that is mind-boggling to me! But, it’s an incredible event (or so I’ve heard…I’ve yet to make it…but I think that will change this year!)

A word to the wise….if you live outside of Midtown Atlanta, use the limited mass transit we DO have, and take MARTA. You can exit at the Midtown Station, and you are just a couple blocks from the action!

Come on out, and sample the culinary delights of Atlanta at Taste of Atlanta! And scope out Midtown Atlanta while you are here! It’s a pretty cool place to live when you have these kinds of events in your back yard!

Click on the picture to head to Taste of Atlanta’s website where you can purchase tickets, get a list of the participating restaurants, and more info about the event!

The Midtown Neighborhood Festival Impact – Crank Up The Music

September 21, 2012 by Thom Abbott

See on Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta Conversations and Condos

Music Midtown September 21-22, 2012Music Midtown 2012 is virtually here as tens of thousands of music-loving fans will be pouring into Piedmont Park on Friday and Saturday. It’s an exciting event featuring some very popular musical acts, but not everyone is whistling a happy tune.

There are concerned residents from neighborhoods that surround the park who wonder why Midtown must bear the burden in order for the rest of metro Atlanta and visitors to party during a string of spring, summer and fall festivals and events staged in and near the park.

Some contend it’s just part of the deal that comes with living in Midtown. Still, others want to insure that Midtown and Piedmont Park doesn’t get taken advantage of. Piedmont Park Conservancy (PPC) Director of Public Relations & Marketing Aimedra Kelley wrote in an email to Midtown Patch:
“Piedmont Park does not benefit from events like Music Midtown. Even though Piedmont Park hosts 85 percent of all permitted events in the City of Atlanta, there is no direct funding from those events supporting Piedmont Park Conservancy’s effort to maintain the Park. All of the funds raised from Conservancy events like Season of Magic, The Green Concert and more directly support the care and continued maintenance of Piedmont Park.”

The City does receive financial compensation from Live Nation Entertainment, which produces Music Midtown. According to City of Atlanta Special Events Coordinator Adrienne Wright, the City receives $250,000, plus $1 for each ticket that is sold that is contributed to Mayor Kasim Reed’s Centers of Hope initiative, which helps fund recreation centers and after-school activities for young people in the city, including upgrades to computer labs, security and other IT needs.

As is the case with all gated, ticketed events at Piedmont Park, it is up to the promoter to repair any damage sustained by the park, including turf damage. This year, the base of the two Music Midtown stages will have been in place for a full week before they’re removed.

Music Midtown Arrives in Midtown Atlanta – September 21-22, 2012

September 20, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Music Midtown makes its way back to Piedmont Park this weekend, Friday and Saturday. As with any major festival in Piedmont Park, there will be traffic, trash and LOTS of people!

Music Midtown 2012 Street Closures Traffic Plan Tickets

As a former resident of Midtown, I know what parking, traffic and all is like. I’m just amazed when people do not make use of MARTA as a MUCH easier way to get in and out of Midtown Atlanta during large events like this. But, if you choose to drive, just be prepared as the Historic part of Midtown (East of Piedmont and South of 10th Street) will be on “lock down” and accessible ONLY to residents of the area.

Here is a map of the Music Midtown Street Closure and Neighborhood Traffic Plan.

Here is a site map of Piedmont Park and Music Midtown

You can get ticket information, and performance schedules at Music Midtown’s website.

From the Music Midtown Site:

Music Midtown 2012 Site Map Midtown Atlanta GAMusic Midtown 2012 will be taking place at the same location as the 2011 festival, on two stages in the 10th Street Meadow at Piedmont Park.

Parking will be very limited, all patrons are encouraged to use MARTA, walk, bicycle, or carpool.

There will be three entry gates into the festival.

Charles Allen Gate is located at the corner of 10th Street and Charles Allen Drive. The Charles Allen Gate is also the “main gate” for Music Midtown.
Park Drive Gate is accessible from Monroe and Park Drive. Patrons can enter the Park through the new expansion and enter the Festival from the north end of the 10th Street Meadow.
Lakeside Gate is accessible from the 12th Street and 14th Street entrances into Piedmont Park. Patrons can enter at the base of Oak Hill by the lake. This route is parallel to 10th Street when walking through the park.
Will Call will be located at the ticket booth at the corner of 10th Street and Charles Allen Drive, across from the Charles Allen Gate.

Guests with VIP or Super VIP tickets will enter through a separate gate on 10th Street. More details will be sent directly to these ticketholders.

The streets will be crowded, and there will be some great music! Enjoy Midtown Atlanta and Music Midtown 2012!

12th Annual Peachtree Latino Festival Piedmont Park Midtown Atlanta August 26

August 23, 2012 by Thom Abbott

The 12th Annual Festival Peachtree Latino will be in Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta, Sunday August 26 from 11am till 8pm.

What is the Festival Peachtree Latino?

Peachtree Latino FestivalSince 2000, the festival has been the largest family and multicultural event in the Southeastern U.S.  Family activities, hundreds of exhibitirs, sporting events and arts and crafts are just some of the activites planned for the 1 day event at Piedmont Park. This year’s festival has an expanded lineup of muscial performances.

Culture and Entertainment

You’ll find the diversity of the Atlanta Latino community will be expressed from Africa to Asia and and Europe to Australia. And you will find that diversity in food, arts and crafts and entertainment!

Yunel Cruz, Chavana, Ana Barbara, El Cata and Widy will be some of the featured performers.

Getting There And Parking

This festival has been held in Centennial Olympic Park for the past few years. A majority of the attendees will be coming from all over the Metro Atlanta area, and may choose to drive, vs. taking MARTA. BAD IDEA! Parking in Midtown around the Piedmont Park area is always a challenge and with the addition of ParkATLANTA and their tickets, it could make for an expensive day if you get a ticket. I’d stronly suggest you drive to one of the outlaying MARTA stations, and take the train to the Midtown MARTA station. You can walk from there to the park and all the festivities. If you are driving, jsut make sure you park legally, and don’t block driveways and such.

We’ll be there and hope to share some follow up pictures of the days events!

Georgia Tech 2012 Football Season Is HERE!

August 21, 2012 by Thom Abbott

GATech Football Season Info 2012I think the saying “Are you Ready for some Football” comes from the NFL advertisements, but it still works here!

Georgia Tech 2012 Football Season

Georgia Tech has long been a part of Midtown Atlanta, and when Football Season arrives, and it’s a home game at Bobby Dodd Stadium, it feels just like ANY college town with a home game!

2012 Schedule

The lineup for this year gives Midtown Atlanta residents 7 changes to see the “home team” play right here! Here’s the schedule:

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 2012 Football Schedule

Homecoming will be October 27th at the game against Bringham Young University!

Georgia Tech 2012 Season Tickets

Georgia Tech 2012 Football Season TicketsI hate to admit, I’ve never made it to a game…yeah, yeah, shame on me! Season Tickets can range up to $70 PER GAME, if you have really choice seats! I tried to “purchase” some of those seats, and was not successful. I guess that means they are already gone.

You can purchase Georgia Tech 2012 Season Tickets here.  They actually have a $249 package for 7 homes games! That comes out to around $35 per game! Not a bad deal! And not bad seats either. The ticket site gives you a sample picture of where the seats are (pretty cool!) This picture is of the location of the seats I selected at this price.

You might be like me and not ready to make that “full season” commitment  You can purchase Single Game Tickets here. This is a great option if you don’t know your schedule long term, or know you specifically want to see a certain game. Maybe you are an alumnus from the other school! Get your tickets now!

But, you might be a recent GATech alum living in Midtown Atlanta? • Georgia Tech (Atlanta) New Alumni may purchase up to two (2) season tickets at a special rate of $150 per ticket; Additional season tickets may be purchased at full price. The TECH Fund is not discounted. To be eligible for the new alumni discount, you must have graduated in December 2011 or will be graduating in May 2012 or August 2012. Sweet!

Football Seating at Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium

Looking to entertain a group of clients? Maybe an office event or a Sales Contest Reward? Check out the Hospitality Packages!

Pre-Game Options

Maybe you live in the Metro Atlanta area, or are driving in from the surrounding states? (That is one thing about Football in the South! Many of the campus’ are within a 6-8 hour drive, so alumni drive in for the home games, and the away team even gets a great showing! I remember seeing lots of Orange last year when Clemson was in town!)

You might be looking for a place to meet up with fellow Tech alumni, or just grab something to eat and have an adult beverage before the game! Your closest restaurants will be in Tech Square at 5th and Spring Street. But if you are looking for more the “sports bar” type of place, then you might consider Marlow’s Tavern, located at 8th & West Peachtree in the Plaza Midtown condominum building. Additional options include City Tap (Former Gordon Biersch on Peachtree Street), Taco Mac and Hudson Grille, all located on Peachtree Street, between 6th and 9th Streets. There is also Cypress Pint and Plate, located at 6th and Cypress, which is a close walk to campus.

Remember the Tech Trolley stops at the Midtown MARTA Station as well as at West Peachtree and 7th for transportation onto the campus. As a word of caution, a new company has recently purchased the parking at Viewpoint, Spire and Metropolis buildings, and the rates have jumped dramatically. Look for surface parking lots to be a cheaper option. As a reminder, “Clean Your Car” and don’t leave anything visible.

Overnight Accommodations Needed?

Melia Midtown HotelYou’ve got numerous options in the Midtown Atlanta area for hotels. Most likely, they won’t be cheap, but hey, it’s 4 buds splitting the cost, right? Here are some of your options, most likely ranging from MOST expensive to least:

  • Renaissance Atlanta Midtown Hotel (Formerly Hotel Palomar and closest luxury hotel to campus) 678-412-2400
  • Loews’ Midtown Atlanta Hotel — 11th and Peachtree Streets – 404-745-5000
  • Four Seasons Hotel Midtown — 14th Street — 404-881-9898
  • Atlanta Marriott Suites Midtown — 14th Street — 404-876-8888
  • Courtyard Atlanta Midtown/Georgia Tech — 1132 Techwood Drive (adjacent to campus off 14th Street) 404-607-1112
  • Hampton Inn Atlanta/Georgia Tech — 244 North Avenue (adjacent to Coca Cola World Headquarters) 404-881-0881
  • Georgia Tech Hotel and Conference Center — Tech Square — 404-838-2100
  • Crown Plaza Hotel — West Peachtree Street @ North Avenue — 404-877-9000

NOTE: While I’ve provided links to the websites and phone numbers, I know that Georgia Tech alum are well…techie, right? Don’t forget to check places like AAA if you are a member for discounts, as well as sites like Priceline.com and Hotwire.com. Now most all of these hotels know it’s a game weekend, but you never now when you might find that hidden deal!

If you just happen to be flying into Atlanta for a game, same yourself the cost of a rental car and parking. Take MARTA from the Atlanta Airport and exit at the Midtown MARTA station. If you are traveling light (luggage that is) the Renaissance and Georgia Tech Hotel are an easy walk from the station. I’d not walk to the Courtyard, just because of location and distance. And the Hampton Inn is accessible from the North Avenue MARTA station!

And as you should do in any major city, always be aware of your surroundings.

Welcome to the Georgia Tech 2012 Football Season!

Post Note – October 9, 2012 — The links to the ticket purchase have stopped working. I’ve tried to re-establish them and it’s all funky! Just Google GATech Football, and the go the the Ramblin’Wreck site to purchase individual game tickets. There are only three home games left, October 20 and 27 and November 17.
