NYC’s coming ‘supertowers’ are nothing to fear

February 16, 2014 by Thom Abbott

See on Scoop.it – Georgia Tech News Events

Who’s afraid of “supertowers” near Central Park? Most of the city’s inflexible preservationists, ivory-tower urbanists, community “activists,” pandering politicians, architectural critics and architects themselves, except for those fortunate enough to…

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

Our “Super Towers” may soon be here with new development planned for Midtown Atlanta at 60 Stories! I say BRING IT ON!!!

What Does an Ice Storm Look Like?

February 12, 2014 by Thom Abbott

February 2014 Ice Storm AtlantaI grew up in Montana.

One year, when I was a kid, we had to snowmobile a mile from the highway into our house…that’s how much snow we had. I think it was the same year when the snow was piled so high on either side of the road, it was like driving in a tunnel. I’ve seen me some bad weather.

But when they predict freezing rain, or an ice storm in the South, it truly brings everything to a grinding halt. It’s pretty hard to do much when EVERYTHING is covered with a sheet of ice. Imagine you could poor water over your entire car, but it freeze the instant it touched it. THAT is what an ice storm looks like.

We are “hunkered down” in our home, well provisioned, with our fingers still crossed we don’t lose power. So far so good, but the day is not over yet.

It’s been a winter alright….even my friends up North have seen their fair share of snow, snow, and more snow. So I suppose a couple days here is not the end of the world. Well, unless you were in a grocery store yesterday afternoon. Then you might have thought otherwise.

Holyfield’s Heavyweight Manse Sells For Measly $5.8M

February 11, 2014 by Thom Abbott

See on Scoop.it – Other Atlanta News Events

Talk about a real deal. The folks at Redfin have confirmed that rapper Rick Ross has purchased the monstrous former Fayetteville home…

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

It was not a Hollywood actor-type taking up residence that purchased this monster of a mansion, but let’s hope that Rick Ross can keep the place up.

Henri Jova Atlanta Architect and Midtown Pioneer Dies at 92

Henri Jova Atlanta Architect and Midtown Pioneer Dies at 92

As reported in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Henri Jova passed away at the age of 92 at his West Palm Beach home on January 13th.

Here is a portion of the story:

One of Atlanta’s greatest architects, Henri Jova, 94, died on Jan. 13 in West Palm Beach, Fla. after a short illness, according to his partner of 42 years, David Rinehart.

A celebration of his life is planned at the Atlanta Botanical Garden on Thursday, April 3 beginning at 5 pm.

Although Jova’s contributions to Atlanta’s architectural fabric was significant, his overall impact on the city went far deeper than his striking designs.

He was the pioneering presence who led the renaissance of both the Midtown neighborhood as well as its once-decrepit business district.

Jova designed Colony Square — a mixed-use development that was revolutionary when it was designed in the early 1970s.

It was the first modern project in Atlanta to combine office, retail, hotel and residential as part of one high-rise complex — a development that struggled initially leading some to believe that it had been built ahead of its time.

But Jova also lived his belief in Midtown. At a time when significant disinvestment was occurring throughout the central city, Jova bought and renovated several properties at the nexus of Seventh Street and Mentelle Drive in the heart of Midtown. It became Jova’s compound — a modern, yet sensitive, interpretation of the residential style that Midtown was to embrace in decades to come.

Atlanta’s Lost Spaces Abound | Riverwalk Atlanta and Hartsfield Incinerator

November 21, 2013 by Thom Abbott

I suppose every city (well maybe not New York or Los Angeles) have lost spaces, waiting to be re-discovered. As a real estate broker, I find myself in many a place that most Atlantan’s have never even been, much less heard of. And then, I even learn about a place I knew nothing about.

A story popped on my Facebook wall this morning and it sent me off in search of exactly where the Hartsfield Incinerator might be located. Well, without a visual drive, I’m guessing, but, maybe where the check mark is on the map below?

Riverwalk Atlanta

The“Riverwalk Atlanta” project would be a 100-plus-acre park on the Chattahoochee River, with the derelict Hartsfield Incinerator site perched at the main entrance like a reminder of Atlanta’s industrial past, says Josh Green in the article from Curbed Atlanta. The incinerator site includes property along the river owned by Georgia Power, which has already granted a conservancy easement, so that’s why I’m thinking this may be the location since it shows a Georgia Power plant along the river.

The Curbed Atlanta article has drawings of what the eventual park could look like, as well as a shot of the overgrown incinerator.

An additional search found the website, RiverwalkAtlanta.org and it has some great information about this project and others along the Chattahoochee River.

Another “lost space” in this area that has already been pegged for redevelopment as part of the Atlanta Beltline is the Bellwood Quarry. I’ve been to this location on a Beltline tour…and it’s hard to imagine this is “hiding” within eyesight of West Midtown and Midtown Atlanta.

If you are new to Atlanta, and might be around for another 20 years…you are going to have some impressive additions to the city in the years to come!

Mom and Dad, Let’s Talk Real Estate — Real Estate Planning

June 30, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Mom and Dad Talk Real EstateI often work with parents of college students who purchase a Midtown Atlanta condo for their son or daughter to live in while attending Georgia Tech. But this article is about a different conversation with Mom and Dad and real estate. It’s about real estate planning and estate planning when it comes to what to do with the family home, or other real estate assets.

This conversation is near and dear to my heart…I just went through it with my Mom (my Dad passed away in 1994) when I was home in Montana a couple weeks ago. We had a family meeting to discuss what remains of our family ranch and such. It was a good meeting (well, it at least got somethings out on the table that some of my family did not know about.)

And then today, the New York Times had an article of the same title. How true it is…the need to talk about family assets and what to do with them…be it sell them, deed them, etc.

They might want to raise cash to pay for possible medical expenses down the line or to reduce assets so a parent needing health aides or nursing-home care will be eligible for Medicaid. They might be eyeing the apartment for their own use.

How do children nudge often-reluctant parents toward making sound and fiscally smart decisions about the future of the family home? How can assets be protected while keeping a roof over the parents’ head? What are the main issues that need to be kept in mind as planning goes forward? How do children, or in their absence, other close relatives, begin the difficult and sometimes painful conversations needed to resolve these issues? In the case of apartments that have sharply escalated in value, how do you guide parents unused to dealing with large sums of money?

Here is a link to the rest of the article in the NYTimes.

Do you need to have a family meeting and discuss the future of your parents? Mom and Dad, let’s talk real estate.
