Atlanta to install free WiFi in Piedmont and Grant Parks

May 31, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Piedmont, Grant Park to get Free WiFi“For a city this size that’s called itself the most connected city in the Southeast, we want to be the leaders of that,”said Interim Chief Information Officer Michael Dogan. “It’s expected you’ll be able to work, play, and enjoy whenever you are.” Dogan was quoted in an article in Creative Loafing.

Atlanta to install free WiFi in Piedmont and Grant Parks

Piedmont Park’s installation is expected to cost “several hundred thousand dollars” to build the necessary infrastructure. Once in place,  there would be additional maintenance costs once the WiFi up and running. While the city hasn’t nailed down a final timeline, Dogan thinks some level of WiFi can be expected within the next six months. And yes, the WiFi will be free, in some capacity.

Additionally, the City of Atlanta is talking with Central Atlanta Progress, Midtown Alliance, and Buckhead Community Improvement District about bringing free WiFi to those business districts. Nothing definite with this proposal…more like it’s under consideration.

I would only say that when using a free network like this, you do open yourself and your computer up to hackers. Considering Midtown Atlanta is home to Georgia Tech….hmmmmm. I might keep my secure wireless connection…but this still is a good thing to offer up. It’s not expected to come on line much before early next year.

InBloom Picks Atlanta as Headquarters

May 18, 2013 by Thom Abbott

InBloom Selects Atlanta as HeadquartersInBloom, a technology based, nonprofit company that is backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has selected a location in Buckhead as its new headquarters. The new office is located in Piedmont Center on Piedmont Road.

According to the company’s website:

inBloom is dedicated to bringing together the data, content and tools educators need to make personalized learning a reality for every student. To achieve this vision, inBloom:

  • Offers states and districts a secure technology infrastructure to integrate data, services and applications that work together to support personalized learning.
  • Partners with education technology companies, content providers and developers to support the creation of products compatible with this infrastructure.
  • Works with states and districts to help them use this infrastructure to support educators and students.

As I looked into who this company was (I saw the announcement in the Atlanta Business Chronicle) I found a pretty cool video on their site about some of their technology. Nothing like when I went to school!

For those who may be interested, the company website also lists several job openings.

The Buckhead location is in a somewhat spread-out office campus, and  is not close to the Buckhead MARTA station for those employees that might want to use mass transit. However, it’s an easy car ride from Midtown Atlanta and its living and entertainment options for anyone that is relocating to Atlanta to join InBloom.

Atlanta Streets Alive 2013 on Peachtree Street | Midtown Atlanta Sunday, May 19 2-6pm

May 17, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Happy Friday one and all!

This is a big one for Midtown Atlanta….but even if you don’t LIVE in Midtown, come on out for….

Atlanta Streets Alive on Peachtree Street

Midtown Atlanta In The HeartSunday, May 19th from 2-6pm,  join your neighbors, family and friends and take to Peachtree Street! Some 2.7 miles, from just shy of the Brookwood split (Where Peachtree Street meets West Peachtree Street) South all the way to Downtown Atlanta, Peachtree Street will be closed to all gasoline-powered transportation for FOUR HOURS! AWESOME!

There will be activities all along the route for you to enjoy! You can see a map of the activities here. It’s interactive, so just click on a star to find out what will be at that particular location!

You can see from the Map below there are FIVE MARTA stations along the route! HINT HINT! If you are coming from outside the area, you might want to consider MARTA. Peachtree Street will be closed, and I suspect only 1 or 2 places for cross traffic along the route, especially in Midtown!

Atlanta Streets Alive May 19 2013

I hope to see you out on this rare opportunity to share Peachtree Street WITHOUT dodging any cars, trucks or buses!!!!

What drives activity on Pinterest? | Science Codex

April 24, 2013 by Thom Abbott

PinterestSee on Scoop.it – Georgia Tech News Events

Researchers at Georgia Tech and the University of Minnesota have released a new study that uses statistical data to help understand the motivations behind Pinterest activity, the roles gender plays among users and the factors that distinguish Pinterest…

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

Are you a Pinterest user? Do you love those pictures and get addicted to finding them and following certain subjects? I know I find myself looking at all kinds of gardening pictures, and of course Real Estate around the country.   But our own Georgia Tech was inv0lved in research about what drives activity on Pinterest.

Some really interesting stuff here!

Shipping Container Construction Makes it to Atlanta | Yumbii to Launch Midtown Restaurant

April 1, 2013 by Thom Abbott

I love creativity. I love “out-of-the-box” thinking. And quite frankly we need more of it in Midtown Atlanta. When we do finally get a great idea, it’s only because somebody else has done it. Shipping container construction is a perfect example. But alas, we are catching up to other cities like San Francisco!

Yumbii To Launch Midtown Restaurant in Shipping Container

Shipping Container Stores In AtlantaYumbii, who also helped launch the food truck industry in Atlanta (another one that has taken off in other cities LONG before it started in the ATL) will now be the pioneer in using a unique form of construction for a restaurant at 10th and Peachtree Streets…a shipping container.

As I mentioned, the trend is well underway in cities like San Francisco, New York and London. this picture shows an amazing use of three containers for the Aether’s high-end apparel store in San Francisco! I mean, how cool looking is that space!!!

Yumbii’s restaurant is proposed for the 10th and Peachtree corner where a new pocket park has just been developed on the mostly empty lot owned by Dewberry Capital. The plan is to expand their food truck menu and have breakfast, lunch and dinner. In an article in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Yumbii owner Carson Young said the concept is a “natural fit” for the Atlanta BeltLine, since the restaurants can be placed on unusal pieces of land, that might not work for a bricks-and-mortar building, or not be accessible by food trucks.

Indeed, this type of construction could really add a cool, hip edge to the Atlanta Beltline, and also give anyone from restaurants to small retailers a much less expensive way to open small stores.

Come on Atlanta (meaning developers, zoning people and such) let’s catch up and BE the cool place we long to be…..I hope we see more and more of these unique containers appearing around Intown Atlanta and Midtown West!

Will Atlanta ever embrace Prefab Construction?

March 11, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Prefab Construction in New York City

Though modular building has been around for a while, more developers and architects are embracing it.

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

This could be an interesting building alternative for Atlanta condominum buildings! I recall the Hilton Palacio del Rio in San Antonio was built this way.
