It’s fair to say that we, the human race, have embraced social media wholeheartedly. It’s changed how we interact significantly, but it’s possible that

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

81 hours a year on Facebook…I can think of many that spend 2 hours per day x 7 days x 30 days= 420 hours in one month….

In Tighter Loan Rules, Wiggle Room for Banks

January 14, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Federal regulators, apparently concerned about doing anything to disrupt a recovering housing market, allowed mortgage lenders big concessions in a new slate of regulations.

But consumer advocates and some industry lawyers say that the safe harbor provision, in practice, will make it difficult for borrowers to pursue an exhaustive legal inquiry. So the safe harbor is seen as a big win for the banks.

“There’s this constant struggle between protection and access to credit,” said Leonard N. Chanin, a partner at Morrison & Foerster.

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

You gotta love the power of the lobbying effort….or not. Banks and Borrowers both got something…but you have to wonder who got the better part of the deal.

Mortgages – Avoiding Loan-Modification Hoaxes

January 13, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Beware of Loan Modifications asking For Upfront MoneySee on Scoop.it – Other Atlanta News Events

Consumer advocates say a growing number of questionable modification services involve lawyers, or people who say they are lawyers.

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

If you are considering, or looking into a loan modification from any source other than directly from your lender, the phrase “Buyer Beware” could never be truer!

Atlanta Chinese New Year Celebration February 9th & 10th

January 12, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Atlanta Chinese New Year Festival February 9-10 Chamblee GAThe Chinese Lunar New Year falls on February 10th this year.  According to the traditional Chinese zodiac, the new year will be the Year of the Snake, although many Chinese prefer to call it the Year of the “Little Dragon.”  The Chinese New Year celebration–referred to in Chinese as “Spring Festival”–is the most important of all Chinese holidays.

The Chinese New Year holiday begins on first day of the first month of the lunar calendar with dragon dances and firecrackers and ends 15 days later with the Lantern Festival.   Spring Festival is the time for family reunions, special meals and new clothes.  Children receive red envelopes containing money from their elders and family traditions and stories are passed down from generation to generation.

Atlanta Chinese New Year Celebration February 9th & 10th

Here in Atlanta, there will be a Festival to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Saturday, February 9th from 10:00am to 4:00pm and Sunday, February 10th from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Cultural Center of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta (5377 New Peachtree Road, Chamblee, GA 30341, Tel. 770-451-4456). The Festival is open to the public.  Admission tickets are $5 per person ($2 of which is returned to you as a voucher that can be used to buy food at the Festival).

The Festival will feature the traditional dragon and lion dancers, authentic Chinese food, Chinese calligraphy and other arts and crafts, as well as traditional Chinese music and dance performances.

More details are available on Facebook  AtlantaChineseLunarNewYearFestival

Consider “Going Green” and taking MARTA to the event. Take the Northeast Line (Also Called the Gold Line) to the Chamblee Station. It’s just a couple blocks walk from the station to the festival site!

Will Atlanta Drown in Wave of New Apartments?

January 9, 2013 by Thom Abbott

See on Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta Conversations and Condos

Trying to tabulate the number of intown apartment developments currently planned, under construction or recently opened is a fool’s errand. There’s that many, from the core of Buckhead to…

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

Indeed! For those investors or absentee landlords, this could become an issue with so many choices for renters. The real question is will thes buildings be able to hold their own and hold their rental rates. If they start to drop them, condo owners will be forced to lower rents to compete as well. And remember, a condo owner has a mortgage payment to make and does not have the financial resources a developer may have to make monthly payments.

A Homemade SAFE Drain Cleaner

December 29, 2012 by Thom Abbott

You’ve all read the warnings on products like Drano. How dangerous they can be if you get them on you, or worse yet, a child get into and drink some of it! So when I heard of this home remedy, I thought….THIS I have to share.

Condo dwellers  I find often take for granted the maintenance you need to perform on your condominium. Yes, it’s not a maintenance-free environment! And one thing you probably do, is dump grease, or at least wash some pretty greasy pans in your sink. Well, if not well flushed with really hot water, that grease and other gunk is going to build up in those pipes!

Drain cleaners typically contain lye or sulfuric acid, both of which are capable of causing an extremely serious chemical burn if splashed on the skin and are very toxic to drink. If drain cleaner hits your eyes, it may cause blindness. To avoid the scary side effects, make an eco-friendly drain cleaner instead with nontoxic ingredients you already own.

 A Homemade SAFE Drain Cleaner

Here is what you need:

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 gallon HOT Water
  • 1 cup white wine vinegar
  • juice from 1/2 lemon

Here is HOW you do it:

First, pour the baking soda down the drain. Baking soda is alkaline, so it will cut through grease and other gunk left in your pipe.

Then, mix the white vinegar and lemon juice. Pour the mixture down the drain after the baking soda. Vinegar is an acid and will make the baking soda foam, providing some agitation to clean your drain.

Wait five minutes, then flush with one gallon of hot water! The water will wash out the foam mixture, also washing out any worrys of having a backed up drain in a condominium, which could mean water damage to you and or your neighbors!
