Atlanta Things To See and Do | Atlanta’s Best Hiking Trails

November 9, 2014 by Thom Abbott

Deep Creek Range Special Events FacilityMidtown Atlanta is an awesome place to live and play! You know how much I love showing and helping people call it home! But we (myself would be at the TOP of the list) often overlook what there can be to see and do when we get out of our comfort zone. It might be Midtown Atlanta, or maybe it’s that fear of crossing that line called OTP –Outside The Perimeter!

This morning, a friend on Facebook posted a question about places to go hiking, without the couple hour drive to the North Georgia Mountains. And what a find, I did find!

Atlanta’s Best Hiking Trails

First off, that photo is NOT from one of these locations, but from my home state of Montana! But, one of the answers on this person’s Facebook wall was a link to a site called Atlanta Trails! Like, WOW…who knew about this? Ok I’m sure some of you outdoorsies types did, but I did not! But a particular page on the site had me most intrigued…and amazed at some of the places that are probably 30 minutes from the comfort of your Midtown condo!

The Top 10 Favorite Hikes

I’m really amazed at some of these places. Now, I’ve got some knee issues so I’m not sure how viable some of these would be for me, but I was especially intrigued by #2 Arabia Mountain Top Trail! I mean, 23 miles and 30 minutes from the urban core of Atlanta and you find this? WOW!

Arabia Mountain map

Let’s just say, you’ll be seeing a blog post with some photos of this one, as I hope to enjoy it in the next few days!

So, hey…when you are sitting in your condo, bored and don’t know what to do….get out and experience nature and it’s wonders just 30 minutes from your parking garage!

Georgia Fall Festivals and Events

October 12, 2014 by Thom Abbott

When it comes to the Fall, Festivals and Georgia, we are NOT lacking for something to do! In fact, you will easily find yourself either “overbooked” one weekend or having to toss a coin as to which one you will be going to!

Most of these are easy day trips from Midtown Atlanta! Maybe grab that picnic basket and your favorite bottle of wine and enjoy!

Georgia Fall Festivals and Events

Oktoberfest –Helen  (through November 2)

the 44th Annual Oktoberfest in Helen is their biggest celebration. You will be hard pressed to resist the oompah rhythms in this quaint Bavaria village in the Appalachian Mountains. German music, dancing, food and drinks. And some shopping I’m sure!  the festival runs daily September 18 – November 2. Click on the link for more info about times and admission.

Georgia Peanut Festival

Georgia Peanut Festival — Sylvester — October 18

I have to admit, I had to look up where Sylvester, Georgia was! West of Tifton, or South on I-75 from Atlanta and take Exit 82 (Ashburn) and follow Highway 112 (Sylvester Road) to….well.

The festival’s largest sponsor is ConAgra Foods, the maker of Peter Pan Peanut Butter. This festival set a special world record in 1987 with the largest peanut butter sandwich…some 12 feet by 12 feet! Yikes! Come celebrate this regional Georgia crop, sample a fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a huge arts and crafts festival as well.

Gold Rush Days — Dahlonega — October 18-19

This is a special one, according to the Southeast Tourism Society, which named Gold Rush Days a Top 20 Event in the Southeast!  This festival commemorates the 1828 discovery of gold in northeast Georgia. Thousands come to see fall colors peaking and celebrate Dahlonega’s 1828 discovery of gold. Over 300 art and craft exhibitors gather around the Public Square and Historic District in support of this annual event, and it is estimated that a crowd of over 200,000 visit over the weekend to join in the fun and excitement. Check the website link for information about times for craft and food booths, a parade and the Saturday night Concert.

Georgia Festivals and Events Mossy Creek Barnyard Festival — Perry — October 18-19

The 66th Festival is located deep in the woods of Middle Georgia…or so the event site says! The festival brings the artistry of tradition, functional crafts center stage! Live demonstrations range from glass blowing to broom making! (Ah, just in time to get you a new broom for Halloween….nice!) For a $5 admission, check out nationally acclaimed folk artists at work! Enjoy traditional fair food, all made and sold by local community groups!

Autumn Leaf Special on the Tennessee Valley Railroad — Chattanooga to Summerville, GA

October 18, 19, 25, 26 and November 1

Now if you want to see the North Georgia Fall Colors from a whole different view, then this might be your ticket! Ride a vintage train round-trip from Chattanooga to Summerville, departing at 9am and returning at 6pm. Spend a 1.5 hour layover in summerville and explore the town. The train also has a dining car as well as a new Premium Observation class seating in a round-end tail car. Sounds pretty awesome to me. And remember, this is something you can do throughout the year, if you miss a fall color tour!!

Georgia Apple Festival — Ellijay — October 18 & 19

Georgia Apple Festival Held at the Lions Club Fairgrounds (1729 South Main Street) the festival is Saturday, 9-6pm and Sunday 9-5pm. Admission is $5 for adults and kids under 10 are… FREE!

In it’s 43rd year, the festival celebrates apples along with over 300 vendors with hand-crafted items, many with on-site demonstrations! No pets allowed, so be sure to leave Fido at home!

Click on the link for more information about parking, vendors and other events.

WHAT did I tell you? We finally get to leave the weekend of October 18 and head on to other things!

I’m not including Halloween activities in this post, I’ll get those posted in another post.

ZombieRun Escape October 25, 2014Zombie Run Escape — Perry — October 25

Well we all know how popular the series, The Walking Dead is…and it’s filmed right here in the Atlanta area! Well, now I guess you can go run around and try and escape from your favorite zombies! Located in the epicenter of the Walking Dead story line and built on the bones of a cold-war era nuclear missile plant lies an incredible 840 acre disaster preparedness training facility.

This facility boasts a multi-story 75 acre urban cityscape, over 300 vehicles, a dual rail subway system and a built-to-DOT-specification interstate highway.  And this is the location of Zombie Run Escape on October 25, 2014.

Bostwick Cotton Gin Festival — Bostwick — November 1

Just outside the historic town of Madison, Georgia ( worth a trip all its own!) is Bostwick and the Cotton Gin Festival, celebrating the year’s cotton harvest. Complete witha a 5K run, parade of tractors and antique cars and cotton ginning, the festival is stuffed full of fun! Consider this one a weekend trip and tie in a visit to Madison with it’s unique shops and restaurants that have earned it a place on Budget Travel  magazine’s “Most Picturesque Villages in the World” list.

For more information about Madison click here!

Highlands Culinary WeekendHighland Culinary Weekend — Highlands, North Carolina — November 6-9

Ok, this might be a notch about an arts and crafts festival…..The entire town of Highlands comes together to celebrate food and friendship during this popular weekend event. Wander between restaurants in the “downtown” area for special menus and workshops, from wine and beer-paring dinners to farm-to-table demonstrations. You’ll want to check out the popular Friday and Saturday night Sip and Stroll tours that show off the city’s distinct retail shops and boutiques on a wine tasting crawl. (I’m loving the sound of this one!) The Sip and Stroll is first come, first served and is $35 per person. HIGHLY recommended that tickets be purchased in advance!

Many of the events prices range from $125 to $175 per person!

Well that should keep us on the road and busy for the next few weekends!!

Where Are The Best Places To See Fall Colors in North Georgia

October 10, 2014 by Thom Abbott

Leaf Watching in North GeorgiaThe arrival of Fall…means the end of the Hotlanta summers we love! It means cooler temps, and the change of the season brings the changing of the colors as the leaves on the trees create a masterpiece canvas of color across North Georgia. Ah, but the question is…

Where Are The Best Places To See Fall Colors in North Georgia

Never fear! The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has put together a great list of the best places to see the Fall Colors in North Georgia! Any of  these places is an easy day trip from Atlanta, but geez, if you are headed to the mountains, maybe an overnight at a local motel or even a cabin rental might be in order! (Cabin rentals for one night during the Fall Color time will probably be next to impossible to find, so check out motels that may have availability!)

Here Are The Best Places to See Fall Colors in North Georgia!

If a day trip from Midtown Atlanta, hop on over to Whole Foods and get some great picnic supplies! Pack up the basket (add a bottle of wine but be careful with the driving!) and enjoy the great outdoors that North Georgia has to offer.

This has always been one of the great things about living in Atlanta, is our change of seasons and the close proximity to the mountains!  Get out and enjoy the fall colors! Hey, you can even share those photos over on our Facebook Page so everyone knows what there is to see!

Atlanta Streets Alive Comes to Midtown Sunday, May 18, 2014 2-6pm

May 15, 2014 by Thom Abbott

Midtown Atlanta Streets Alive May 18 2014It’s not every day that you see streets in Atlanta not filled with the ever present automobile. Unless you live in a neighborhood like Midtown Atlanta, it’s pretty hard NOT to have a car and get around.

But, we are making strides in getting the urban core of Atlanta to be more transit-oriented, as well as even more walkable. So, what better way to get you into the streets, than to CLOSE THE STREET TO AUTOMOBILE TRAFFIC!

Atlanta Streets Alive Comes to Midtown

Sunday, May 18, 2014 2-6pm

This Sunday, May 18, 2014 from 2-6pm, Peachtree Street will be closed from 17th Street to Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Downtown Atlanta. Yes, Peachtree Street will be free of cars and you can walk right down the middle to your hearts content!

Activities will be varied from zumba classes to fashion shows and more! Or you might find a choice spot in a sidewalk cafe and just watch the people while you enjoy lunch and your favorite beverage (I’m thinking you might find me at my fav…Gordon Biersch Midtown!)

For more information, here is the flyer from Midtown Alliance!

And here is the Map. Never fear, the yellow dots indicate where automobiles WILL be able to CROSS Peachtree Street, but not travel North and South!

Midtown Atlanta Condos For Sale |But Are They Really?

April 22, 2014 by Thom Abbott

condo hoa feesAs a real estate broker and blogger, I most often like to write my own content. If you know me, you can pretty quickly tell a lot about me just from my writing style. I tell it like it is, but all too often in a nice way. (That’s my hospitality training that has been embedded into me!) But not the reason for this post!

As a Midtown Atlanta condo buyer, you are looking for one thing… Midtown Atlanta Condos For Sale. Right? Now you have your specific wants and needs, but overall, when you come to MyMidtownMojo.com or our totally rock it out new search site, your primary goal is to see WHAT Midtown Atlanta Condos are For Sale. Right?

So why is it when you venture off (what did your Mother tell you about not taking the sidewalk on the way to school) to one of those Big Guys sites, you find these condos, but then, when you call me, I either can’t find the same listing…or it’s not really For Sale.

Is Atlanta Ready (or Willing) For Transit?

March 21, 2014 by Thom Abbott

An informative post, but some what of an editorial one as well!

Atlanta is on the rise again! Cranes are coming out of the ground in Midtown and Buckhead as new apartment towers start to take shape. And yes, even the suburbs are on fire again as homes are being built and excess lot inventory is dropping to even critical levels in some areas!

But, is Atlanta Ready (or Willing) to embrace transit as a way to get to and from work? The first portion of an Atlanta Streetcar will open later this year in Downtown, between the Centennial Olympic Park and the Auburn District. Hopefully more to come in the future? Expansion of the MARTA rail line is doubtful due to the cost. So that leave bust transit, probably the most cost effective. So, will Atlanta embrace it…and will we need or use a Downtown Multi-Modal Transit Terminal like this?

Multi Modal Transit Terminal

Stories about the 119-acre development in the heart of Downtown Atlanta (can you wrap your head around the fact that a major metropolitan area HAS 119 acres in its DOWNTOWN to develop in the first place?) have appeared in both the Atlanta Business Chronicle and Curbed. com. It seems the folks at Curbed.com got access to a video that has since disappeared from any and all of the links referenced in each story. But you can see some more of the plans in the Curbed.com article here.

What do you think? Do you see Atlantan’s headed to Downtown from the burbs on buses?
