Atlanta Chinese New Year Celebration February 9th & 10th

January 12, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Atlanta Chinese New Year Festival February 9-10 Chamblee GAThe Chinese Lunar New Year falls on February 10th this year.  According to the traditional Chinese zodiac, the new year will be the Year of the Snake, although many Chinese prefer to call it the Year of the “Little Dragon.”  The Chinese New Year celebration–referred to in Chinese as “Spring Festival”–is the most important of all Chinese holidays.

The Chinese New Year holiday begins on first day of the first month of the lunar calendar with dragon dances and firecrackers and ends 15 days later with the Lantern Festival.   Spring Festival is the time for family reunions, special meals and new clothes.  Children receive red envelopes containing money from their elders and family traditions and stories are passed down from generation to generation.

Atlanta Chinese New Year Celebration February 9th & 10th

Here in Atlanta, there will be a Festival to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Saturday, February 9th from 10:00am to 4:00pm and Sunday, February 10th from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the Cultural Center of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Atlanta (5377 New Peachtree Road, Chamblee, GA 30341, Tel. 770-451-4456). The Festival is open to the public.  Admission tickets are $5 per person ($2 of which is returned to you as a voucher that can be used to buy food at the Festival).

The Festival will feature the traditional dragon and lion dancers, authentic Chinese food, Chinese calligraphy and other arts and crafts, as well as traditional Chinese music and dance performances.

More details are available on Facebook  AtlantaChineseLunarNewYearFestival

Consider “Going Green” and taking MARTA to the event. Take the Northeast Line (Also Called the Gold Line) to the Chamblee Station. It’s just a couple blocks walk from the station to the festival site!

Georgia Junior Bowl – Midtown Atlanta – December 31

December 26, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Georgia Junior Bowl at Grady High December 31See on Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta Conversations and Condos

Ninety-eight of Georgia’s top high school football juniors will gather in Atlanta on Dec. 27 for a five day developmental program known as theRisingSeniors.com AT&T Georgia Junior Bowl, founded by former Georgia Tech star and Buffalo Bill, Joe Burns, and Dallas Cowboy, Izell Reese.

RisingSeniors was created to assist high school juniors with their athletic, academic and social development while preparing them for their senior year and instilling in them the necessary tools to thrive academically, athletically and socially. This program is offered to the selected participants as an all-expense paid scholarship program covered by the RisingSeniors Foundation.

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

Can’t say I ever heard of this event..and it’s right here in Midtown Atlanta! I always like to learn about new events….but when they are in my backyard and I did not even know…well then! But looks like an incredible opportunity for high school football juniors!

Chamblee’s Antique Row District Holiday Open House | December 1 & 2, 2012

November 25, 2012 by Thom Abbott

I like history. I like old things. I grew up around antiques. My parent’s home was wall-to-wall full of them until my Mom’s house burned down in 2005. I have a new appreciation for things from the past that have been lost….photographs, family heirlooms, and such.

Chamblee’s Antique Row District Holiday Open House December 1-2, 2012

Chamblee Historic Antique District

Antiques and Collectibles in Chamblee Antique RowWhether you are an antique lover or not, a trip through an antique store can bring back lots of memories! And I’ve got JUST the time and place in Atlanta for you to take that trip down memory lane, and maybe even pick up a holiday gift! Chamblee’s Antique Row District Holiday Open House! Saturday, the stores will be open from 11am – 6pm and again on Sunday from Noon-5pm.

There will be refreshments, treats and an opportunity to register to win prizes! You can visit the Antique Row website here!

As strolled through the Broad Street Antique Mall as I took pictures for this post, and WOW, what a collection of items! Mind you, this is a “mall” with numerous dealers under one roof, but, just look at the list of particpants:

  • Antique Factory
  • Assistance League of Atlanta
  • Atlanta Antique Gallery
  • Atlanta Furniture Restoration
  • Atlanta Vintage Books
  • Blanton House
  • Broad Street Antique Mall
  • Chamblee Antiques & Collectibles
  • Consignment Furniture Depot
  • Estate Gallery
  • Gone To The Dogs
  • My Sister’s Closet
  • Rust ‘n’ Dust Antiques
  • St Vincent dePaul Thrift Store
  • The Treasure Mart
  • The UPS Store ( Ha Ha….just down Broad Street and ready to safely pack and ship the treasure off for Santa!
  • Maison Robert
  • Zen Tea
  • Frosty Caboose
Chamblee’s Antique Row District Location

WHEW! I don’t think I even realized how many stores are part of the Chamblee Antique Row District! I’m even going to venture back! And if you live in Midtown Atlanta, and don’t want to break out the car (you might need the space to bring home your treasures, but…) you can take the MARTA Gold Line to Doraville, and exit at the Chamblee Station. You will have to exit the station, walk to Chamblee Tucker Road, turn right under the tracks, and then right on New Peachtree Road, and walk to the District from there. It’s a nice  walk, past 5300 Lofts, and some of the historic store fronts that face the railroad tracks. (Another trip back in time!)

All this, and inside of Atlanta! Who knew!?

Come check out the Chamblee Antique Row District Holiday Open House, December 1 & 2! On your way back to the MARTA station, or if you are driving, be sure to stop at the Frosty Caboose for a treat. (Hopefully it will be a warm winter day for ice cream!) If you’re hungry, maybe a visit to Five Guys Burgers in Chamblee Plaza will be in order!

Black Friday Bash at Atlantic Station| November 23, 2012 2-9pm

November 20, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Atlantic StationFinally, something about the Thanksgiving holiday that is not what time the stores will open or what are you eating! How about a concert in Central Park with the Jam Out at Black Friday Bash @ Atlantic Station!

What Is Atlantic Station?

If you’ve just landed in Atlanta for the holiday weekend, or just have not ventured ITP (Inside The Perimeter) from the burbs of Atlanta, Atlantic Station is one of the most successful brownfield redevelopments in the country! (The name comes from the Atlantic Steel Mill which use to occupy this site.) Now, Atlantic Station is an almost model live-work-play community located across the Downtown Connector from Midtown Atlanta proper. ( Exit 17th Street via I-85/75 North or South to get to Atlantic Station)

Some 45 merchants and restaurants await you when visiting Atlantic Station. The list (and their hours of operation on Black Friday are below!)

Who Will Be Performing at Black Friday Bash?

Some great groups will be on hand to entertain from 2pm until 9pm!

Jam Out at Black Friday Bash at Atlantic Station

You Said There were some 45 Merchants at Atlantic Station?

Yes…I did…and it even kind of surprised ME!

Atlantic Station Stores and Shops

I just might be dancing on the streets and in the Park! Hope to see you there!
