Brookhaven Georgia

Brookhaven Georgia is a city in the northeastern suburbs of Atlanta. It is in western DeKalb County, Georgia, United States, directly northeast of Atlanta. On July 31, 2012, Brookhaven was approved in a referendum to become DeKalb County's 11th city. Incorporation officially took place on December 17, 2012, on which date municipal operations commenced. With a population of around 49,000, it is the largest city in DeKalb County. The new city stretches over 12 square miles.

Brookhaven has always been called just that, but it was not an actual city...well at least not since 1965. The area was incorporated as the city of North Atlanta in 1924. In 1963, the North Atlanta's leaders asked the state Legislature to allow a referendum on a new city charter. The Legislature agreed, but also included an additional option in the referendum: disincorporation. The majority of voters chose disincorporation, and the city's charter was dissolved in 1965.

Notable parts of Brookhaven include Town Brookhaven, a mixed-use development that languished post real-estate crash, but now features restaurants, theater, apartments and a Costco Warehouse and Publix Market. There is also Brookhaven Village, located along Dresden Drive that has restaurants, retail and condominiums as well as newly constructed apartment complexes.

Oglethorpe University is located in Brookhaven, and there is also the Brookhaven MARTA station, a stop on the Gold Line that terminates in Doraville at Assembly Doraville.

Areas of Brookhaven are seeing extensive "tear downs" where older homes are being torn down and new construction coming in. Take a drive down Ashford Road off of Dresden Drive, and there are but a few original homes remaining on this particular street.

Brookhaven Georgia is looking at the Buford Highway corridor that runs through its city limits as the next area available for redevelopment. This section of Buford Highway is lined with older apartment complexes that sit on large tracts of land...and are in the eyes of developers looking for ITP (Inside the Perimeter) locations to build new homes and townhomes on.
