One Minute Sermon — Kinda Sums it Up!

August 8, 2010 by Thom Abbott

While I consider myself a religious person, I don’t attend church regularly. (Duck as things are thrown at you…)

And I’m certainly never one to “preach” to anyone……I probably have no room to talk, right?

So, maybe somebody else can say it better than me?

Lindbergh Varsity Jr To Close After 45 Years! Thanks Atlanta…NOT!

August 7, 2010 by Thom Abbott

Lindbergh Varsity Jr. Shutting down after 45 Years! OMG!

But what makes this story so sad, is it’s not economics ( in one sense….) it’s plain stupid government……

Varsity Paper HatVarsity Vice-President John Browne called the decision to close the 45-year-old Lindbergh diner “absolutely one of the toughest we ever made.” A makeover had been planned for years, but the Varsity and the City of Atlanta clashed over how many driveways in and out of the restaurant would be allowed. Currently there’s three, but the city would approve only one for a rezoned Varsity Jr.

Mind you, I sit on the Board of Midtown Neighbors’ Associaition and we hear these Land Use Committee issues often. And in a heavily traveled pedestrian area, I completely understand wanting less “curb cuts” and minimizing the impact on pedestrians. Also it does have something to do with safety, traffic flow and the like.

But when the rules run a perfectly good business, employing hard working people, out of business, there is just something plain WRONG WITH THE SYSTEM!!!

The company posted an announcement on it’s website, and it reads like a family saying good-by to a loved one.

And just what a neighborhood wants to see….another empty business, overgrown with weeds.

I’m telling you City of Atlanta, you screwed this one up. Period. End of Paragraph!

Museum of Design (MODA) Moves to Midtown Atlanta

June 21, 2010 by Thom Abbott

Museum of Design (MODA) Moves to Midtown Atlanta

Museum of Design Midtown AtlantaMidtown Atlanta has long had the name, “Heart of The Arts,” and with good reason. From the High Museum and Woodruff Arts Center, to the Fox Theatre, 14th Street Playhouse and the Laughing Skull Theatre, we’ve got some art happening in Midtown.

So, it just seems a natural fit to hear that the Museum of Design (MODA) is moving from Downtown Atlanta to a new location across the street from….The High Museum! How perfect could that be!

Now, let me be the first (well, maybe not) to say, I did not even KNOW about MODA and the Downtown Atlanta location! Now, it will be right across from another major museum, and hopefully this will bolster its image and awareness.

In an article at ArtsCriticATL.com,  Brenda Galina, the MODA Executive Director said, “Having Peachtree frontage in the culture district is a dream.” The new location will be on the ground floor of the new headquarters for Perkins + Will, an architectural firm and will be located at 1315 Peachtree Street.

The Museum of Design will need to work to generate more income and grants to be there for the long term. But with a great location in Midtown Atlanta, art lovers now can get a “two for one” by having two museums across the street from each other!

Thomas Ramon Realty wishes Ms. Galina and the museum the best and we look forward to seeing the new “digs” when they open next year!

Midtown Muscle By Beth Estes

Midtown Muscle by Beth Estes

Life has a funny way of bringing things around in a circle. Know what I mean?

Years ago (I mean YEARS ago) I use to be in the hotel industry. In fact, that is what I got my degree in from the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. Anyway….that’s another story.

The last hotel I worked at was the Hotel Nikko Atlanta which is now the Grand Hyatt Buckhead. Through the power of social media and all, I’ve reconnected with a co-worker from there, Beth Estes. Beth stayed the course a bit longer than me in the hotel industry, but has now branched out into the fitness world. And let me tell you….she looks fab!!! (Hmmm…maybe I need to work out a trade Beth?)

I am going to start featuring a monthly column from Beth about fitness. I hope you will find it useful and informative. And if you are feeling the need to build up that Midtown Muscle, then why not give Beth a call. I’m sure she will whip you into shape in no time!

You can reach Beth Estes at 404.634.7617 or at EatSleepAndExerciseBeth.com

Summer Lunch Box Series – Midtown Atlanta GA

Woodruff Arts CenterAh yes, summer is upon us here in ATL! With it brings a whole new crop of events and things to do, despite our nickname of “Hotlanta.” Yes, it does get a bit warm, but still it is nice to be outside!  Well, the Summer Lunch Box Series is your ticket.

Hosted by Midtown Alliance, this weekly event is held every Wednesday, 11:30am – 2:00pm at the new Arts District Plaza at the Intersection of 15th and Peachtree Streets.  Each week, food is provided by some of Midtown Atlanta’s finest restaurants, ranging in price from $5-7! Live music is provided each week as well.

Here is the restaurant schedule from now through July 28th.  Check back, and as we know the entertainment for each week, we will add that onto the list.

Atlanta-Macon Commuter Train

May 27, 2010 by Thom Abbott

Atlanta-Macon Commuter Train

300px-ATL_People_Mover_2As I read stories about the development of mass-transportation projects, I’m often confronted with the question, “Will Georgia EVER get mass transportation, or will be just be left standing on the platform….that does not even exist?”

We actually missed the train back in the 60’s or 70’s when MARTA was being constructed. Individual county governments were allowed to decided if they wanted the system or not. As a result, MARTA only services DeKalb and Fulton Counties. When I say “service,” I mean where the actual trains run. Gwinnett County wanted nothing to do with trains coming to their pretty suburb. Ah Ha! Now what to do they have….a bus system of red buses I see each day bringing in the Gwinnett commuters to Buckhead, Midtown and Downtown. I think I recall they (residents) were surveyed and would NOW support a tax to pay for mass transit. Ah, sorry….you have been left at the station. The cost to build any more MARTA lines is now past any return on investment.

So, now, a train from Atlanta to Macon? Development of more urban-friendly communities where people can walk and leave those nasty vehicles parked? WOW, what a concept.

Let’s hope that this project will move forward. It could be a big boost to the South side of Atlanta all the way to Macon, and just imagine the jobs……something everyone needs right now.

Here’s a link to the article, Atlanta-Macon Commuter Rail as it appeared in Creative Loafing.
