Atlanta Second Most Socially Networked American City!

Thom Abbott On TwitterThis is some pretty impressive news. I first learned about Twitter back in 2008 while taking a Social Media Marketing class from some real guru’s on the West Coast. I remember searching Twitter for people in Atlanta, and the most I could find was about 300 people. I told the instructors of my class that I was not sure what Twitter was, but it was NOT Atlanta.

Fast Forward to 2011, and let me eat my words! Yep.

Men’s Health Magazine did a little research, and here is Atlanta, the Second Most Socially Networked American City! Amazing!  They first started by calculating the number of Facebook and LinkedIn users per capita. Then they looked at overall Twitter usage (NetProspex). This was followed by traffic at  major sites like   Myspace, (really?) Friendster, Reddit, and Digg (analyzed by ad network Chitika). Lastly, a look at the  percentage of households that check chat rooms and blogs (SimplyMap), and the results were complete!

Tonight’s Top Ten Most socially networked Cities Are —-

  1. Washington, DC     A+
  2. Atlanta, GA     A+
  3. Denver, CO     A+
  4. Minneapolis, MN     A+
  5. Seattle, WA     A+
  6. San Francisco, CA     A
  7. Orlando, FL     A
  8. Austin, TX     A
  9. Boston, MA     A
  10. Salt Lake City, UT     A-

So I also had to wonder about my home state of Montana. After all, it’s pretty wide open space out there in Big Sky Country. Well, Billings, the largest city did come in at 91. Whoops. But at least it was not El Paso, Texas that rounded out the top 100.

Doraville Approves Plans To Redevelop GM Site

So, what is an article about Doraville doing on a site that is all about Midtown Atlanta? Well there are a couple reasons why I wanted to share this story with you.

You might recall a few years back when the massive 12th & Midtown project was announced. A condominium tower, office tower and a luxury hotel. This was some pretty awesome new construction for the Midtown Atlanta real estate market.  Or how about even further back when a developer took an old steel mill site and turned it into Atlantic Station. Well, the Doraville GM plant has all the makings to dwarf either of these projects.

This past Monday, the Doraville City Council approved a plan, a year or more in the making, to turn the 165-acre site into a regional commercial, residential and shopping district.  Although Doraville is some 8 miles from Midtown Atlanta, this development could have some impact on the Midtown Atlanta real estate market. How?

Well, it the site is purchased by one developer, the future cost of building say condominiums or town home-like residences could be less expensive than the land is in Midtown Atlanta. Furthermore, with the MARTA North line ending right at the site, it could be an attractive place for a resident of Midtown Atlanta to work, and be able to take MARTA, door to door. Or the reverse could happen…someone living in the GM development could take the train to Midtown to work. So there are some possibilities for impact on Midtown.

As I mentioned, a developer might look to build there, vs. Midtown Atlanta. This could be a good thing for the Midtown market as buyers have to look to resale condominiums if there is no new construction on the horizon.

The site is the single largest tract of land inside I-285, much larger than the Atlantic Station development, located just West of Midtown Atlanta. The size of the site is much larger than Atlantic Station, but would not have the same high rise construction due to the location of Dekalb-Peachtree Airport.

Of course, with the economic times what they are, it may be sometimes before this project takes off. But, just imagine it going from this…

Injured cop says ‘move over’ law must be enforced

A sad, but VERY important story from the AJC about a local police officer that was hit alongside the road during a traffic stop.
IT IS GEORGIA LAW when you see an emergency vehicle alongside the road or freeway that you are to move one lane away (left or right depending on where it is) if at all possible, or  SLOW DOWN!!!! Imagine this being your husband/wife/significant other……

Midtown Atlanta SafetyCobb County police officer Andrew Singleton saw the headlights coming toward him, but there was nowhere he could go.

“The only thing I could do was jump,” Singleton said at his Marietta home Monday night. “I jumped and tried to get on top of the car, but I didn’t make it.”

Singleton doesn’t remember the impact. But he remembers hitting the ground. And now he’s got the fractured wrist, foot and knee to prove it. Doctors believe he could have additional injuries, too, such as tendon damage, Singleton said.

Singleton was hit late Thursday night by a suspected drunk driver as he was getting back into his patrol car following a traffic stop. Monday evening, he spoke with reporters for the first time about the incident.

“I’m doing about as well as I can be doing,” said Singleton, who sustained multiple injuries when he was struck.

That driver, Irving Alicea, initially continued driving north on Cobb Parkway, but was stopped about 20 minutes later. Alicea was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to move over for an emergency vehicle and felony hit-and-run. The 40-year-old, who was not injured, was released Friday morning on $30,000 bond, jail records indicate.

Singleton, a 30-year-old father of three, said he wanted to let people know that injuries like his could be avoided if drivers obeyed a law already in the place.

“If you see an emergency vehicle stopped on the road, you’re supposed to move over one lane, or be prepared to stop,” Singleton said. “If we have that lane, it’s so much safer.”

Singleton, who has been a Cobb officer for nearly eight years, said he is planning to return to his job, but he’s not sure when that will happen. Until then, he’s grateful that his injuries aren’t more severe and hopes drivers can learn from his ordeal.

“Police officers are fairly normal people,” he said. “And if you move over and give us that lane, we can come home.”
