Georgia Tech College of Computing 2011 Holiday Gift Guide

December 16, 2011 by Thom Abbott

College of Computing Holiday Gift GuideOk, when I first saw this alert this morning for the Georgia Tech College of Computing 2011 Holiday Gift Guide, I thought….HOLY COW!!! I can imagine the totally awesome stuff these geek  students are going to offer up. Of course, they will most likely be “super gifts” that are outside my gifting budget.

Well, I was kinda right. In fact, they are not gifts you can purchase at all. But instead, the Georgia Tech College of Computing 2011 Holiday Gift Guide is actually a unique spin on the traditional holiday gift guide, showcasing some of the year’s biggest research stories from the College.

“They sometimes bristle at being called ‘elves,’ but we’ve got a College full of faculty and students who’ve been working very hard on these projects all year,” said Zvi Galil, John P. Imlay Jr. Dean of Computing. “We are, obviously, having a bit of fun in showcasing our research like this, but there’s also a serious point. Part of our mission is to help improve the world through education and research, and the projects in this Gift Guide can legitimately be counted among our efforts to give back to society—indeed, some are explicitly intended as computational ways to serve the social good.” (See the rest of the article here.)

Music Midtown Arrives in Midtown Atlanta

September 23, 2011 by Thom Abbott

Music Midtown AtlantaAnother big event is about to desend upon Midtown Atlanta….Music Midtown!

Set up for the 1-day music concert is well under way at Piedmont Park. And we all know that major events in Piedmont Park mean parking and traffic challenges for Midtown residents. The larger impact of such events is usually felt by the residents of Historic Midtown more so than the Peachtree Street residents, but it is noticable all the way around.

Attendees to Music Midtown are strongly encouraged to take MARTA to the Midtown Station and then walk to the park for the event.

This line up for Music Midtown  is a pretty impressive one:

Cold Play

Manchester Orchestra

Young the Giant

The Black Keys

The Joy Formidale

Band of Skulls

The Constellations

The Postelles

Walk the Moon

Music Midtown has various streets partially closed and areas of Midtown Atlanta blocked to resident-only traffic. Here’s a map of the details.

Atlanta Arts Festival Midtown Atlanta GA September 17-18, 2011

September 15, 2011 by Thom Abbott

Atlanta Arts Festival Midtown AtlantaAtlanta Arts Festival Midtown AtlantaOne of the great things about Midtown Atlanta, and the Greater Atlanta Metro area, is our festivals. If you are a festivholic (I made that one up!) then you can get your fix in the Atlanta area. From Spring to Fall, we’ve got ’em all. Festivals that is. And this weekend brings you the Atlanta Arts Festival in Midtown Atlanta GA at Piedmont Park!

If you did not have a chance to get out and about the U.S. this summer, then you can find treasures from across the state as some 200 artists display their talents, all in Midtown Atlanta’s back yard, Piedmont Park. This is the 5th year for this event which is for both the art collector with a big wallet and those that might just be starting to find that right piece for their Midtown Atlanta Condominium. Other attendees can simply fill their weekend with entertainment (and people watching…my total favorite)

The Midtown Atlanta Arts Festival, LLC was founded by Julie Johnston Tepp with the goal of contributing to the cultural life of the community, specifically by producing a quality fine art/fine craft Festival. Tepp has some experience behind her, having served on the Dogwood Festival Committee for some 9 years prior to this festival.

The Artist’s Market will be open on Saturday from 10am-7pm and on Sunday from 10am – 6pm. For more of a complete information here is the Atlanta Arts Festival Midtown Atlanta schedule.

Here is a map of the festival, centered around the Active Oval in Piedmont Park.

Fox Theatre's 'Phantom' Can Stay – Midtown, GA Patch

June 22, 2011 by Thom Abbott

I met Joe once through his love of old cars…he has a few tucked away in a warehouse in West Midtown I believe. This is just great news that he will stay in his apartment at the Fox. ~~Thom Abbott

The “Phantom of the Fox” will continue to live at the Fox Theatre in Midtown.

It was announced Tuesday that Joe Patten — a long-time caretaker and advocate for the Fox — has been granted the right to stay in his apartment at the theatre.

Called the “Phantom of the Fox” by supporters, Patten was threatened with eviction last year by Atlanta Landmarks Inc., which owns and operates the Fox. Patten responded with a lawsuit.

On June 21, it was announced that the lawsuit has been settled. The following statement was released:

Joe Patten, Atlanta Landmarks and Woody White are pleased to announce that they have resolved all of the claims and issues associated with Mr. Patten’s lawsuit and that the lawsuit will be dismissed.  Under the terms of the settlement agreement, which are confidential, Mr. Patten will continue to live in the apartment and Atlanta Landmarks will continue to have the right to manage the theatre property.

Patten has lived at the Fox for more than 30 years and has twice saved the theatre from destruction.

From the Facebook page dedicated to Patten:

Joe Patten first came to Fox Theatre in the 1960s as a volunteer, working long hours at his own expense to restore the theatre’s incredible Mighty Mo organ (the second largest theatre organ in the U.S.).

When the theatre was threatened with destruction in the early ’70s, Joe led the campaign to Save the Fox; a massive citywide effort to keep the historic theatre operational for the enjoyment of all of Atlanta and beyond.

Joe has been restoring the Fox as its technical director and caretaker ever since. To reward him for his hard work and to have someone on hand to protect the building who knew its every nook and cranny, Joe was asked to move in! He built his apartment, at his own expense, in an unused part of the building that had once been office and storage space and given a lifetime lease to live there.

In 1996, Joe saved the Fox once again, this time from an early morning fire that threatened to ravage the building.
