NO Virginia, Your Car CAN’T SWIM!

July 4, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Atlanta Safe Driving TipsIf it was not for the fact that we are having extreme weather and events all across the U.S., I’d say leave it to Georgia and Atlanta to be 106 degrees one day (breaking any record temp ever set mind you!!!) and then have 3 inches of rain fall in less than an hour a couple days later! But there seems to be extreme weather all over. But when it rains  3 inches in an hour, NO Virginia, Your Car CAN”T SWIM!

I am amazed when on the freeways (or do we call them Interstates here?) around Atlanta and it’s raining that many drivers still think they are invincible with that 5,000 pound of metal and rubber surrounding them. Sadly, when the hit that standing water in the street or on the freeway, they are going to be in for a surprise!  1) they just might hydroplane their sorry a– into a median wall (and let’s hope and pray they don’t take out one or two other cars in the process, or 2) they are going to drown the engine and end up stranded.

When the heavy Southern rains arrive, you need to watch for standing water when on the road.  If you think it’s to deep to cross, it probably is! There are several places I know of on a regular basis along the Buford Highway Connector and I-85 that will retain water if it rains very heavy for a period of time. But if you are not familiar with the road you are on, error on the side of caution, and turn around.

What’s the risk if you decide to be Jacques Cousteau and forge ahead? Well…..

  • flooding the engine
  • warping brake rotors
  • disabling power steering
  • short out the electrical system (and THEN try to unlock those POWER Door locks!)

Such damage to a car may, or may NOT be covered by your car insurance. These are most likely covered under your comprehensive coverage, one that you are not required to have.

So the next time you fly down I-85, remember, NO Virginia, Your Car CAN’T SWIM and you could be risking your life and those on the road around you!

Review Panel Sides With Georgia Tech Foundation Concerning Crum & Forster

June 25, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Unless preservationists can convince three-fourths of the Atlanta UDC that the panel’s findings are wrong, two-thirds of Landmark Midtown Atlanta building will most likely be demolished to make way for a new 24-story tower for Georgia Tech!

The Atlanta 48 Hour Film Festival — What a Project!

June 23, 2012 by Thom Abbott

The weekend of June 15-17, film teams scoured the City of Atlanta with one goal in mind — Take a subject matter handed to them at 6pm on Friday, and turn it into a short film by 7pm on Sunday night. That is The Atlanta 48 Hour Film Festival!

The Atlanta 48 Hour Film Festival creates a weekend of little to no sleep, and a mad dash during which a Director and a team make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 48 hours.

On Friday night June 15th at 6pm, teams met at  PC& E Production lighting. There, they were given a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the movie had to be completed and turned in at Mellow Mushroom Pizza on Peachtree Road at 26th Street by 7pm.

The results will be screened tonight at 7pm and 9:15pm at  The Plaza Theatre, 1049 Ponce De Leon Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30306. Tickets are $12.50 at the door!

Here’s the team I’m rooting for!

Also, this is not just an Atlanta thing! Check out all the cities that are involved. Click here to learn more about The 48 Hour Film Festival.

10 Reasons to Visit a National Park Right Now (Photos) : Discovery Channel

June 18, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Yellowstone National ParkSee on Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta Conversations and Condos

I grew up next to one of these incredible natural treasures that can be found within our own United States. But even though our family ranch was but 40 miles from the North Entrance to Yellowstone National Park, I don’t recall many of our visits. I can remember when you truly could SEE a bear and FEED a bear, but those that were not smart enough to stay in their cars, caused this to be a rare sighting now in the park. But as an adult, I’ve been back to the park once, and really toured it, but that was years ago. I just returned from Montana and a visit to family, and now wish I would of scheduled a day trip to the park. A must nexte year for sure.

But Yellowstone is not the only National Park. Our National Park System is a true treasure. Here’s 10 great reasons to visit it right now.
