Are You Ready For a Natural Disaster?

April 18, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Natural Disaster PlanningSometimes, living in a large city like Atlanta, can make one forget about things like being prepared for a natural disaster. So we have them in Atlanta, yes we do!

It has already been 5 years, but in 2008, a tornado went right through Downtown Atlanta, causing severe damage to numerous buildings, including the Westin Peachtree Plaza where numerous windows were blown out. Later, the hotel had to completely replace all of the windows in the 50 story building so they would match.

Are you prepared for such a disaster? If you live in suburban Atlanta, tornados DO happen! So can flooding of local creeks from heavy rains. I’d say we don’t have to worry about blizzards, but do you remember the Winter of 2011 and ice skating on Peachtree Street? Did you make it to the store and stock up before the streets were ice, and stayed that way for like FIVE days?

Whether you are single and live alone, or have a family, you need a plan to be ready for a natural disaster….Why not look at the FEMA site Ready.gov for tips and ideas on how to plan for a natural disaster. Having a plan now, could save your family in the future.

A Safer Midtown Atlanta Starts With….YOU!

April 17, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Your Role in A Safer Midtown AtlantaYes, Midtown Atlanta IS an urban area in a major metropolitan city…Atlanta. (Hope that was not a surprise to you?) And as should be expected of any resident or visitor to an urban area, you need to pay attention to your surroundings. Your personal safety always starts with knowing what’s around you at all times.  It’s not to say that something is going to happen to you, but when you are prepared, it makes a big difference.

So, what is YOUR Roll in a Safer Midtown Atlanta?

BE ESPECIALLY ATTENTIVE TO THE FOLLOWING AND REPORT THEM TO 911 WITHOUT DELAY:

  •     Any obvious criminal activity
        Street prostitution and drug activity
Snooping, hiding, or wandering on private property or in alleyways
        Peeking into parked cars
Solicitors, especially those going door-to-door – they’re usually street scammers
Unusual noises, such as glass breaking, screaming, or dog barking.
        Irrational, menacing, or threatening conduct
Walking down street with weapons or unusual object
Property being taken out of houses or buildings where no one is at home or the business is closed
Cars, vans, or trucks moving slowly with no lights or apparent destination
        Altercations and street fights
Anyone being forced into a vehicle
Sitting in a car day or night, especially when transactions are taking place
A stranger stopping to talk to, or lure a child
        Running as if from something
If in doubt, err on the side of calling the law. Trust your instincts…
Do not attempt to handle these situations on your own. Report these kinds of situations to 911 immediately

REPORT SUSPICIOUS AND CRIMINAL ACTIVITY TO 911

Midtown Atlanta SafetyWhen calling 911 remain calm and give the following information:

WHO you are – briefly identify yourself and your location
    WHAT you are reporting
    WHERE this is happening
WAIT for additional questions by the 911 operator
Note the following to the best of your ability:

Suspect(s): sex, race, age, height, weight, shoes, hair color, clothing, distinctive characteristics such as beard, mustache, scars, injuries or bleeding, items carried and accent/manner of speaking
Vehicles: if a vehicle is involved note color, make, model, year, license plate, and special features such as stickers, markings, and dents

Even though you may call 911 anonymously, it is helpful if you are available to police for clarification and information. Keep the line open once you make the 911 call. Once police address the incident, be sure to tell your neighbors and us about it at earliest convenience.

PLEASE ADVISE THE MPSA OF ONGOING PATTERNS SUCH AS:

Drug Dealing – characterized by frequent, short visits by various individuals
    Vagrants Camping & Loitering
    Nuisance Properties
    Litter Accumulation
    Graffiti and street spam
    Abandoned and junked vehicles
Suspicious and nuisance activity, such as panhandling and drug activity
Dark places along streets, especially malfunctioning street lights
Street prostitution and signs of such, including (patterns of) used condoms

These things adversely affect neighborhood safety, quality of living, aesthetics and property values. They need to be addressed as early as possible.

MPSA (Midtown Ponce Security Alliance) is the community sponsored security arm that primarily patrols Historic Midtown. But their service and patrols are an important part of the overall Midtown Atlanta security presence. Their patrols often stop and catch people and problems from getting much further into Midtown Atlanta proper.

A SAFE & THRIVING NEIGHBORHOOD IN A NUTSHELL:

    Network with your neighbors
    See something, say something
Get out and enjoy the neighborhood
Support your patrol. The MPSA appreciates your ongoing support. Your neighborhood MPSA Patrol serves as a crucial strategy in   optimizing the Midtown experience.

While you may not directly live in an area where MPSA patrols (like a Peachtree Street condo) you can certainly support the MPSA with a financial contribution. The same will help MPSA fund additional patrol hours for those parts of Midtown Atlanta not covered by Midtown Blue. Keep in mind, you may walk through Historic Midtown on your way to Piedmont Park, and those  blue Midtown Blue trucks do not patrol this area!

It takes everyone to make Midtown Atlanta a safe place to live.

For The Love of a Dog

April 15, 2012 by Thom Abbott

For The Love of a Dog

If ONLY people could have this kind of unconditional love and respect for one another.

Makes me think of the person on the other end of the phone when you call a lender and they

deny your short sale or tell you your home is on it’s way to foreclosure…..

But more than that, it’s just about unconditional love….

We were given:

Two hands to hold.

To legs to walk.

Two eyes to see.

Two ears to listen.

But why only one heart?

Because the other was given to someone else.

For us to find.

Atlanta Dogwood Festival — April 20-22, 2012 Midtown Atlanta

April 9, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Traditions are a wonderful thing in life. Be they certain holiday decorations, or an annual family gathering, or……The 76th Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival!

Atlanta Dogwood Festival April 20-22, 2012

As the number 76 implies, this Atlanta Festival has been a mainstay in the festival “circuit” as you will. It usually announces the arrival of Spring in Atlanta, although this year Mother Nature has one-uped the Festival as our trees are fully leafed out…and the temperature’s play with the 80’s already in late March. But, the weekend of of April 20-22, 2012 will see some 200,000 people parade through Midtown Atlanta’s Backyard….Piedmont Park.

Dogwood Festival Piedmont Park April 20-22, 2012The Atlanta Dogwood Festival website still has the 2011 Map on it, so while we have included it here as a reference, it might be wise to check again if you are looking for something in particular. However, the Piedmont Park Conservancy, the organization charged with running and maintaining the park has pretty strict guidelines on what can be where, so you can be pretty safe in knowing the Food Vendors will be where the Food Vendors have been, and the concert will be where the concert has been.  Speaking of concerts….Roberta Flack!!! FREE! Awesome!

Speaking of Food Vendors, if you long for a bit more of “sit down, people watch and have a drink” kind of lunch, there are three very close options to the Park itself. The Nook is located at the 14th Street Entrance.  At the 12th Street Entrance, you’ll find Willy’s and The Parq. All 3 offer patio dining to take in the sights, sounds and the weather. But if you head further into Midtown Atlanta you’ll find my favorite home away from home, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant on Peachtree, between 6th and 7th Streets.

I have to say, I’ve never purchased any art at the festival. Not for not wanting to, but usually my wallet seemed to have an empty spot where the cash should be. But I always get great ideas for “someday….” Hopefully, you will find that special piece of art or painting or drawing you’ve been looking for to put on the wall or display in your Midtown Atlanta condo….or where ever you may live.

Welcome To Midtown Atlanta and the 76th Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival, April 20-22, 2012

Georgia enticing film production companies with tax incentive credit

April 4, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Via Scoop.it – Georgia Film & TV

Money talks and Georgia aims to continue throwing it around to Hollywood in order to keep actors and moviemaking within the Peach State. In fact, Georgia is one of the leading states in the country when it comes to enticing film production companies to park their celebrity trailers on red clay soil, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

That’s because the state doesn’t have a cap limiting the dollar amount a production company can save through its generous tax credits. And legislators expect Gov. Nathan Deal to sign a bill that will ensure those credits stay that way.
