Atlanta Legoland Amongst Phipps Plaza Fashion

September 27, 2011 by Thom Abbott

STORY UPDATE:

I brought this to you back in February of this year. In a story from 11Alive News, Mayor Kasim Reed was to have attended the ground breaking today (September 27)  at Phipps Plaza. (I missed this story or I would have been there!) LegoLand Discovery Center is sure to be a hit! I wonder if I’m to big to go?

If you’ve ever shopped Atlanta, you know that the two premiere places to shop are Lenox Square and its neighbor across Peachtree, Phipps Plaza.

Atlanta Legoland Discovery Center
Atlanta Legoland Discovery Center

Well, in 2012, Phipps is going to be home to a pretty cool children’s attraction…the Atlanta Legoland Discovery Center.

Merlin Entertainments, the London-based company that owns the concept, will build a $12 million, 32,000 sq ft plus attraction on the 3rd floor of the famed Buckhead shopping “destination.” (Heavens, you would NEVER call Phipps a “center!)

The Atlanta Journal Constitution quoted William Pate, President of the Atlanta Convention & Visitor Bureau; “Atlanta has become one of the country’s most popular family travel destinations, and the new Legoland Discovery Center will provide another great experience for visitors.”

The article further describes what the attraction will include:

  • 4D Cinema
  • Lego Rides ( hmmmm….)
  • Exhibits?

A visit to the Dallas Legoland site lists rides and attractions such as Lego Factory, Miniland and Lego Racers. (I’m liking the sound of this…)

Atlanta Legoland Discovery Center

So, does Legoland sound like a fit amongst the posh stores like Nordstrom, Gucci and Giorgio Armani? I guess Merlin does. We’ll have to wait till 2012 to find out!

Chattahoochee River

September 9, 2011 by Thom Abbott

Chattahoochee River Paces Mill RampLiving in a major metropolitan city like Atlanta has lots of advantages. From Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta Airport which can get you to almost anyplace non-stop, major sports teams, shopping, and night life are just some of the great things to experience when you live in Atlanta. But, when you want to have recreation, some cities can be challenging. Not Atlanta. We’ve got some incredible place to “get away” with out ever leaving the city. One such place is the Chattahoochee River.

President Jimmy Carter said it best on August 15, 1978 when he signed the legislation that set aside a 48-mile stretch of the river with a series of parklands to preserve a part of the river valley for future generations.

“It’s one of the most beautiful places in our country, extremely valuable to all those who know it, who live near it, and who appreciate the quiet and seclusion and the beauty and the value of this river…It’s a rare occasion when within the city limits of one of our major cities, one can find pure water and trout and free canoeing and rapids and the seclusion of the Earth the way God made it. But the Chattahoochee River is this kind of place.”

For Midtown Atlanta residents, the closest Chattahoochee River access is found at Paces Mill and/or Palisades. Here’s a map to show you just how close you are…

Chattahoochee River Relationship to Midtown Atlanta

At one time, there was a rafting company that offered rafting trips from one of the upper locations to Paces Mill, but they have gone out of business. But even an afternoon hike is enjoyable and to be so close to Midtown Atlanta. Depending on the river level, one great way to spend a hot afternoon is to take a lawn chair or folding chair, a picnic lunch a good book and hang out on a sandbar along the river. Keep in mind that all access points along the river are not the same. That’s why I like the Paces Mill location….because there is often a sandbar to hang out on. And if you have a dog…..let the fun begin chasing sticks in the river!

The Chattahoochee River level will vary based on if either Buford Dam or Morgan Falls Dam have released water into the river. As far down as Paces Mill, this may not be an issue, but y0u could suddenly find your sandbar under water! You can find more information about Water Release by calling Buford Dam at 770-945-1466 or Morgan Falls Dam at 404-329-1455. Enter these numbers in your cell phone now and use them!

There is a $3 Parking fee at any of the river access locations with parking lots. If you suddenly find you want to visit the various parts of the Chattahoochee River, you might want to consider purchasing an Annual pass, just $25.00.

To know your way around the Chattahoochee River Trail System, be sure to check for a trail map…we wouldn’t want you lost!

On your next day off, or Saturday and Sunday, venture close to OTP (Outside the Perimeter, but not quite) and check out the Chattahoochee River. Yes, we have Piedmont Park in our backyard in Midtown Atlanta, but hey…..when you can have a river!

Promenade II Midtown Office Tower Goes On The Market

September 5, 2011 by Thom Abbott

Promenade II Midtown Atlanta GeorgiaOffice buildings in Midtown Atlanta seem to be some of the real estate that is moving. Recently, Dewberry Capital purchased the former Bell South headquarters building, Campanile, at 14th and Peachtree Streets, and has since signed on Sun Trust Bank as a major tenant.

Now, Promenade II, a 38-story office tower located between 14th and 15th Streets is up For Sale.

The building which is owned by Charter Hall Office REIT, is under contract to Beacon Capital Partners LLC of Boston. Beacon will try to sell Promenade II since Atlanta is not one of its core markets, real estate observers have noted. Bids are expected to reach $150 per sq. ft or around $116 million.

The building has also been known as the AT & T building, and was originally part of a plan to build two additional towers on the adjoining land. The two other towers, of 48 and 58 stories, were never built due to the collapse of the commercial real estate market in the early 1990s. (We’ve heard THAT story before!)

Let’s see who the new owner is and what the plan will be for Promenade II, a Midtown Atlanta landmark.

7 Steps to Winning 2011

August 31, 2011 by Thom Abbott

HeatherONo, I can’t take credit for being so clever as to come up with the 7 steps to Winning in 2011. I’m not quite that witty I’m afraid. But, I do know good, great, incredible advice when I see it…and this is some of that good stuff you just want to make sure everyone gets to read.

My good friend (we’ve actually only met IRL once in Raleigh for a social media/real estate gig) HeatherO has some pretty good stuff to say. I enjoy reading it, following it and/or putting things into practice. So it best I share it too. Thanks Heather! (Not sure I can pull 4og’s out of a hat in 3 months, but hey, you’ve inspired me!

Read the 7 Steps to Winning in 2011 here and enjoy!

Bartow County Sports Complex Means JOBS!

August 20, 2011 by Thom Abbott

Lake Point Sporting Community and Town CenterBARTOW COUNTY, GA – It sounds a little like the plot from the movie Field of Dreams.

A group of private investors is betting that “if you build it, they will come”.

They’re counting on more than 3 million people a year showing up.

Nine months after first announcing a huge youth sports complex to be located in Bartow County, they are on their way to realizing their dream.

That dream could also mean thousands, possibly tens of thousands of jobs.

Among the investors are former Atlanta Braves Manager Bobby Cox, current Braves Manager Fredi Gonzalez and Kansas City Royals Manager Ned Yost.
