12th Annual Peachtree Latino Festival Piedmont Park Midtown Atlanta August 26

August 23, 2012 by Thom Abbott

The 12th Annual Festival Peachtree Latino will be in Piedmont Park in Midtown Atlanta, Sunday August 26 from 11am till 8pm.

What is the Festival Peachtree Latino?

Peachtree Latino FestivalSince 2000, the festival has been the largest family and multicultural event in the Southeastern U.S.  Family activities, hundreds of exhibitirs, sporting events and arts and crafts are just some of the activites planned for the 1 day event at Piedmont Park. This year’s festival has an expanded lineup of muscial performances.

Culture and Entertainment

You’ll find the diversity of the Atlanta Latino community will be expressed from Africa to Asia and and Europe to Australia. And you will find that diversity in food, arts and crafts and entertainment!

Yunel Cruz, Chavana, Ana Barbara, El Cata and Widy will be some of the featured performers.

Getting There And Parking

This festival has been held in Centennial Olympic Park for the past few years. A majority of the attendees will be coming from all over the Metro Atlanta area, and may choose to drive, vs. taking MARTA. BAD IDEA! Parking in Midtown around the Piedmont Park area is always a challenge and with the addition of ParkATLANTA and their tickets, it could make for an expensive day if you get a ticket. I’d stronly suggest you drive to one of the outlaying MARTA stations, and take the train to the Midtown MARTA station. You can walk from there to the park and all the festivities. If you are driving, jsut make sure you park legally, and don’t block driveways and such.

We’ll be there and hope to share some follow up pictures of the days events!

Midtown Atlanta Parking Fines May Raise | ajc.com

June 4, 2012 by Thom Abbott

ParkAtlanta To Raise Parking Fines in AtlantaSee on Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta Conversations and Condos

Drivers in  Midtown Atlanta could face steeper fines for overstaying their welcome at hundreds of parking meters operated by ParkAtlanta, according to legislation set to be considered by Atlanta’s City Council.

The private company that runs Atlanta’s on-street parking program wants a larger and more predictable stream of revenue. Residents and visitors want relief from what some describe as hyper-aggressive parking enforcement.

Atlanta officials are trying to figure out a way to collect more parking revenue even as they try to placate business owners who say ParkAtlanta is driving away customers. Some business people say the burden should be spread throughout the city instead of concentrated in their neighborhoods.

U.S. housing market shows improved foot traffic and sales data as spring season enters stretch run. The challenge now is finding enough inventory, Realtors say.

A lack of inventory is also a problem in certain Atlanta neighborhoods, says Thom Abbott, an associate broker at Thomas Ramon Realty at Palmer House Properties. His firm specializes in Midtown condos at prices ranging from $80,000 to more than $600,000.

To sprawl or not to sprawl? A Story about the Transportation Tax Vote

May 17, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Atlanta Transportation Tax VoteSee on Scoop.it – Other Atlanta News Events

In this article by Thomas Wheatley from Creative Loafing, he brings up some very, very interesting points. This transportation tax will be voted on in July, and when you look at the overall measure and how much money is still being pumped into road construction…..”For five years I’ve been practically begging to pay an extra tax to build sorely needed transit in metro Atlanta. Now that it’s a possibility, I wonder if the measure we’re being asked to consider this summer is really such a good idea.”

100 6TH Street Apartment Tower Proposed for Midtown Atlanta

May 8, 2012 by Thom Abbott

23 Story Apartment Building Proposed for 100 6th StreetWell, a few years ago the cranes scrambled for a place on the Midtown Atlanta skyline to build the condo towers that now grace the Midtown Atlanta skyline. Fast forward to 2012…and the race is on again to dot the skyline…but this time to build apartment buildings like 100 6th Street.

This evening, I attended the Design Review Committee meeting of the Midtown Alliance where Novare Group’s Jim Borders (builder of Metropolis, Spire, Viewpoint, Twelve Atlantic Station, Twelve Centennial Park, The Atlantic and more….) made his case for the new 23-story tower that will house some 320 homes along with an adjacent parking structure with some 400+ parking spaces.

The rendering here (also shown at tonight’s meeting) is the South facing portion of 100 6th Street. The parking deck y0u see to the right will run from almost the corner of 6th Street to the Corner of 7th Street. Sadly, garages are still needed in the City of Atlanta since mass transit is still a dream for Atlanta, but this one will take up almost a whole BLOCK! The architects played the cards right as there are two retail spaces fronting Juniper Street (even though they are not required) to keep the surrounding Midtown neighbors happy about not having a block of dead space.

For those questioning the exact location, the tower of 100 6th Street will sit basically where Loca Luna Restaurant and The Armory Bar use to be.

Some of the DRC members were not to happy about a proposed “pocket park” at the corner of 7th and Juniper Streets. One committee member said that while the idea sounded good, because of a lack of activity on that corner, the park could have the potential to be a safety issue. When asked why that corner did not have a retail space, Mr. Borders commented that is was “not a marketable space.” I think what he meant to say was he just could not charge enough for it!

If there is anything that Midtown Atlanta lacks it is AFFORDABLE retail space. Perhaps the way to “market this corner” is to a merchant that has the marketing savvy to bring in customers and can make it in the space because it’s not costing them an arm and a leg every month in rent. It will be interesting to see if this portion of the design gets changed based on community input.

It was also not 100% clear to me how the new building will be placed in relation to the current Viewpoint Midtown tower. Hopefully, those owners on the South facing side of Viewpoint will still have…..a view.

But for now, it looks like another crane for another apartment building (we have two under construction now) will be on the skyline in the coming months .

Atlanta Dogwood Festival — April 20-22, 2012 Midtown Atlanta

April 9, 2012 by Thom Abbott

Traditions are a wonderful thing in life. Be they certain holiday decorations, or an annual family gathering, or……The 76th Annual Atlanta Dogwood Festival!

Atlanta Dogwood Festival April 20-22, 2012

As the number 76 implies, this Atlanta Festival has been a mainstay in the festival “circuit” as you will. It usually announces the arrival of Spring in Atlanta, although this year Mother Nature has one-uped the Festival as our trees are fully leafed out…and the temperature’s play with the 80’s already in late March. But, the weekend of of April 20-22, 2012 will see some 200,000 people parade through Midtown Atlanta’s Backyard….Piedmont Park.

Dogwood Festival Piedmont Park April 20-22, 2012The Atlanta Dogwood Festival website still has the 2011 Map on it, so while we have included it here as a reference, it might be wise to check again if you are looking for something in particular. However, the Piedmont Park Conservancy, the organization charged with running and maintaining the park has pretty strict guidelines on what can be where, so you can be pretty safe in knowing the Food Vendors will be where the Food Vendors have been, and the concert will be where the concert has been.  Speaking of concerts….Roberta Flack!!! FREE! Awesome!

Speaking of Food Vendors, if you long for a bit more of “sit down, people watch and have a drink” kind of lunch, there are three very close options to the Park itself. The Nook is located at the 14th Street Entrance.  At the 12th Street Entrance, you’ll find Willy’s and The Parq. All 3 offer patio dining to take in the sights, sounds and the weather. But if you head further into Midtown Atlanta you’ll find my favorite home away from home, Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant on Peachtree, between 6th and 7th Streets.

I have to say, I’ve never purchased any art at the festival. Not for not wanting to, but usually my wallet seemed to have an empty spot where the cash should be. But I always get great ideas for “someday….” Hopefully, you will find that special piece of art or painting or drawing you’ve been looking for to put on the wall or display in your Midtown Atlanta condo….or where ever you may live.
