Atlanta Top 10 City For Tech Mergers and Acquisitions

February 27, 2013 by Thom Abbott

If you have ever wondered how Atlanta ranks in the world of technology, wonder no more!

Technology Mergers in AtlantaAtlanta was named a top 10 city for private tech company acquisitions last year, according to PrivCo’s Private Tech Company M&A Research Report, which ranks metro areas by the number of private tech companies acquired.

In a story that appeared in the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Atlanta ranked 8th, above Houston and Dallas.

Up-and-coming tech hubs, such as Los Angeles, and Atlanta are challenging traditional leaders, such as Raleigh-Durham’s “Research Triangle” and biotech hub San Diego, who missed this year’s list, PrivCo noted.

It’s no wonder Atlanta is ranking up in the tech world with companies like Big Nerd Ranch, Google and Facebook staking ground. Couple that with the technology coming out of Georgia Tech, and it make sense.

If you are relocation to the Metro Atlanta area as part of one of these mergers, I’d be delighted to help you find a great new place to call home…maybe even Midtown Atlanta!

Midtown Atlanta Spells Walkability!

February 18, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Midtown Atlanta Walkable Neighborhood

If you live in your car, you really might not grasp the concept of walking out your front door, and within steps, be at Starbucks or Gordon Biersch, Fresh To Order, Five Guys Burgers, CVS Pharmacy, Senior Patron’s, a bank, an eye doctor AND a dry cleaners!

But, in Midtown Atlanta, that is all possible.

Midtown Atlanta Spells Walkability!

All those places above? Other than Starbucks, which is….gasp….across the street, all of those places are ON THE SAME SQUARE BLOCK in Midtown Atlanta. Several of them make up the retail portion of Spire Midtown Atlanta! Gordon Biersch and CVS Pharmacy are on the same block as Spire, but free standing buildings.

Can you imagine coming home from work on Friday night ( we are presuming you may have to use your automobile to commute to and from work) and not starting the car again until Monday morning? But during that 48+ hours, you could take in a Broadway play, view priceless works of art, have coffee, breakfast, lunch and dinner and never turn on the stove? If that appeals to you, then Midtown Atlanta IS the place for you!

What does walkability mean to a community? Just take a look!

And when you are ready to enjoy all this, call me and let’s find you that perfect Midtown Atlanta home!

Three Georgia companies on Fortune ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’ list

January 18, 2013 by Thom Abbott

There are lots of good things in Georgia…many of them I’ve yet to experience…..but that’s another post!

Atlanta (and Georgia) has some pretty impressive place to work! We have some major U.S. Corporations based in Atlanta, including Coca-Cola, Delta AirLines and United Parcel Service, just to name a few! but, it’s pretty cool when you make Fortune Magazine’s list for something!

Three Georgia companies on Fortune ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’ list

Fortune Magazine’s 2013 “100 Best Companies to Work For” list has  three companies that many Georgians  know.

Coming in at Number  23 is Atlanta law firm Alston & Bird LLP, which has 1,646 employees. Ranking 24th in 2011, Alston & Bird, LLP is praised for such employee benefits as  “$10,000 and 90 paid days off for adoptions; partial scholarships for on-site child care; health coverage for autism, infertility, and marriage counseling; and an entire wall dedicated to the artwork of employees’ children.” (BTW….their offices are located in Midtown Atlanta!!)

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta ranked 46th with 6,755 employees. Ranking 49th in 2011, Fortune commented that the hospital “lures nursing recruits with slumber parties for out-of-state candidates to interview and meet with leaders, site tours for families, and tickets to events.”

Columbus, Ga.-based insurance giant Aflac Inc. (NYSE: AFL) came in at No. 84.  Fortune liked how AFLAC “hosts an annual six-day appreciation week; last year it included theme park visits, film showings, skating, and daily giveaways.”

I once had the opportunity to visit AFLAC’s headquarters….imagine a table SO large, made out of a tree, that it was put in place AS the building was being built….and won’t be coming out anytime soon. I also remember the house with the lawn, built on top of the garage!

Maybe you can make your career move to one of these companies…or any of the other great choices you’ll find in the Metro Atlanta area!!

How Atlanta Compares to Other U.S. Cities

January 9, 2013 by Thom Abbott

Atlanta Condo Prices Rise 23 Percent

If you are considering a move to Atlanta, you’d probably want to know how she compares to other cities, right? Maybe you have a choice of jobs in say San Francisco or Atlanta. Well, how much will get, or how far will your money go in the Peach City known as Atlanta?

Atlanta offers are many! Our close proximity to the North Georgia mountains offers countless recreation opportunities, not to mention a lush, scenic landscape that is carried right through Atlanta. In fact, many people comment on our tree coverage when flying into the city. Atlanta is blessed with several  major lakes. Closer in to the North, you’ll find Lake Allatoona and Lake Lanier. About an hour east of Atlanta you’ll find the combo of Lake Oconee and Lake Sinclair and to the South, perhaps the lesser known Jackson Lake.

Diverse cultural offerings range from world-class museums to Civil War battlefields and historic mansions. Many of these are tucked in close-in Atlanta neighborhoods like Buckhead or Decatur, or in suburbs like Kennesaw.

And then there is Southern Hospitality. Warm smiling faces and that occasional Southern drawl!

How Atlanta Compares to…?

If you were moving to Atlanta with a $50,000 annual salary, how would that salary compare to other U.S. cities?

  • $113,305 in New York City
  • $84,251 in San Francisco
  • $71,673 in Washington, D.C.
  • $64,085 in Seattle
  • $61,486 in Chicago

When it comes to living in Atlanta, almost every expense is well below the national norm. The data below shows relative price levels for consumer goods and services you would need. The average composite index for the U.S. is 100%, and each city’s index is read as a percentage of the overall average.

Atlanta Relocation Info and Cost of Living Chart

Of course, these are averages, and lifestyle and where you live in Atlanta can certainly impact any of these. If you live in an outlying suburb and have a longer commute, you may have lower housing costs but higher transportation costs.

Life is Good In Atlanta!
