Could The Atlanta Civic Center Become a Film and Television Center?

August 10, 2014 by Thom Abbott

It’s been languishing there for sometime…with quite the name to follow….Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center LocationAtlanta Civic Center. But times have changed since 1967. I remember going to see the Lion King here and would miss much of the show because if you did not have a dead center seat, the show was off to the side.

Now, imagine….Film and television studios surrounded by a performing arts center, a hotel, along with residential, office and retail could transform the downtown Civic Center property into a regional tourist destination. The site is actually in what is often called no-mans land, since the Downtown CID and the Midtown CID don’t cover the area.

But the location certainly IS close enough to draw off either visitors/residents of Midtown Atlanta as well as visitors in the Downtown Atlanta area attending conventions and visiting other tourist attractions like the Football Hall of Fame, World of Coke and the Aquarium.

The city is in the initial process of getting a real estate broker in place and issuing a RFP (request for proposal) as to what the site could be turned into.

In the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Carter is the one proposing such an exciting change to the site.

Bob Peterson, Carter’s chairman and CEO, said the firm is putting together a team that specializes in entertainment-oriented developments and movie-television production facilities. “The idea of studios with pre-production and post-production facilities, live TV and live audiences is not unique, but seeing that conceptually in Atlanta is new,” Peterson said.

Carter officials have had “a number of conversations” with a potential studio operator that he described as capable, reputable and financially sound.

The potential redevelopment of such a site (some 19 acres in fact) just shows there is still room for some exciting projects to come to live in Midtown Atlanta and the surrounding area. Keep in mind, the Civic Center MARTA station will also help this be a transit-oriented development…something we certainly need in Atlanta.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this project for sure!

Atlanta Streets Alive Comes to Midtown Sunday, May 18, 2014 2-6pm

May 15, 2014 by Thom Abbott

Midtown Atlanta Streets Alive May 18 2014It’s not every day that you see streets in Atlanta not filled with the ever present automobile. Unless you live in a neighborhood like Midtown Atlanta, it’s pretty hard NOT to have a car and get around.

But, we are making strides in getting the urban core of Atlanta to be more transit-oriented, as well as even more walkable. So, what better way to get you into the streets, than to CLOSE THE STREET TO AUTOMOBILE TRAFFIC!

Atlanta Streets Alive Comes to Midtown

Sunday, May 18, 2014 2-6pm

This Sunday, May 18, 2014 from 2-6pm, Peachtree Street will be closed from 17th Street to Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive in Downtown Atlanta. Yes, Peachtree Street will be free of cars and you can walk right down the middle to your hearts content!

Activities will be varied from zumba classes to fashion shows and more! Or you might find a choice spot in a sidewalk cafe and just watch the people while you enjoy lunch and your favorite beverage (I’m thinking you might find me at my fav…Gordon Biersch Midtown!)

For more information, here is the flyer from Midtown Alliance!

And here is the Map. Never fear, the yellow dots indicate where automobiles WILL be able to CROSS Peachtree Street, but not travel North and South!

Does Apple Consider The Midtown Mile a “Bad Apple?”

April 15, 2014 by Thom Abbott

apple macbookFor those of us that live, work and play in Midtown Atlanta, you know we have restaurants on every corner….and in between. No shortage of those! (Some of them also seem to come and go before we even get a chance to sample them…i.e. La Tagliatella in Metropolis!)

One of the components that just seems to be missing is shopping. Not the $1000 chair kind of shopping either. Perhaps a gift boutique where you can grab that last minute condo-warming gift your forgot. Or perhaps some new designer undies. Or maybe a new MacBook Pro…..

Rumors have swirled several times in years past about Apple opening a flagship store in Midtown Atlanta. Heavens alive, there is enough technology being used in the Midtown area, and a glance at laptop logos in Starbuck’s at Peachtree and 7th will see plenty of the little apples indeed. There was once talk of the plaza at 999 Peachtree being  turned inside out and an Apple Store Midtown Atlanta going there. It would seem Midtown has once again been overlooked by the fruit of the computer world.

CurbedAtlanta reported that a new store is headed for Cumberland Mall. While Cumberland Mall is physically closer to Midtown than Perimeter Mall, there is an Apple store at Lenox Mall in Buckhead. (Just don’t ever, ever go on a Saturday….Yikes!) And of course, the eco-conscious can take MARTA to Lenox or Perimeter Mall…but you will need 4 wheels to get to Cumberland Mall.

While Cumberland Mall will not confirm the addition of an Apple store, their leasing plans indicate otherwise…

Apple Store Midtown Atlanta NOT

So, why can’t we have an Apple Store Midtown Atlanta?

Michael Tavani of ScoutMob plans Atlanta incubator at Ponce City Market

March 13, 2014 by Thom Abbott

See on Scoop.it – Midtown Atlanta Conversations and Condos

Michael Tavani says Atlanta has great big consumer brands, but lags in the startup game. He aims to help change that with a startup incubator near such iconic offices as Coca-Cola’s headquarters.

Thom Abbott‘s insight:

Midtown Atlanta is indeed the tech spot of Atlanta! By locating this consumer startup incubator at Ponce City Market, Michael Tavani is giving people the opportunity to work, play and LIVE close to work!
