THE Atlanta Film Festival — March 20-29, 2015

March 20, 2015 by Thom Abbott

Yes, you read that date right!

TODAY, FRIDAY, MARCH 20, 2015 –STARTS THE ATLANTA FILM FESTIVAL!

As some of you may know, I’ve already worked with numerous people from the West Coast, Chicago, New York and most recently North Carolina in the film and television industry relocate to the Metro Atlanta area! So, it’s only a natural fit, that I’ve become involved in the Atlanta Film Festival!

The Festival kicks off tonight (sorry, the Opening Party and Opening Film are completely SOLD OUT!) but there are many opportunities over the coming week to experience some amazing films, meet and greets, workshops and more. I can’t begin to do the program and the festival justice…so just click on the photo/logo below and you will be taken to the ATLFF Schedule page where you can see what’s happening!

Whole Foods Considers 14th Street Location in Midtown Atlanta

March 18, 2015 by Thom Abbott

Whole Foods 14th West Peachtree Midtown AtlantaIt looks like a much needed grocery store could appear in Midtown Atlanta…mind you not until 2018!!!!

Whole Foods Market, based in Austin, TX is in talks with The Related Group for a 60,000 sq. ft “urban store” on the site of their proposed 400-unit apartment building at 14th and West Peachtree Streets. The store would anchor Related’s planned project which might include two towers built in phases. The “urban store” format indicates that the store would be on several levels, versus all one level as is common with grocery stores. If you want a cool idea of what this could be like, just venture to Columbus Circle in New York City!

Whole Foods has one store in Midtown, although it’s on the fringe at Midtown Place across from the Ponce City Market on Ponce De Leon Avenue. This location would be somewhat more walkable for people in such Midtown Atlanta condo buildings as 1010Midtown, Peachtree Walk and even a Publix alternative to those in Plaza Midtown, where there is currently a Publix market. Get much further away and you’ll probably see Midtown peeps in their autos…so look for a parking garage! (Will they figure out how to mask it by the time they build this one? Who knows?)

Novare 14th Street Apartment BuildingBack in May, 2014, the Atlanta Business Chronicle (ABC) reported that the Related Group had the 2.2 acre site under contract. There are currently two surface parking lots there. At that same time, the ABC article made comment about the ever growing pipeline of apartments on tap for Midtown Atlanta. Of concern is too many of the units hitting the market at once, according to analysts such as Haddow & Co. To many at one time That’s could begin to soften intown rents, which today are well above $2 a square foot at the newest projects.

Keep in mind, this site is just across the street from the new Novare building, at 13th and West Peachtree. So keep your eyes open for yet another apartment crane on the Midtown Atlanta horizon.

PLANS FILED FOR 25-STORY AZURE ON THE PARK APARTMENT TOWER NEAR PIEDMONT PARK

March 4, 2015 by Thom Abbott

Well, it looks like Midtown Atlanta is going to see another high rise building. But condo buyers….not so fast!

PLANS FILED FOR 25-STORY AZURE ON THE PARK APARTMENT TOWER NEAR PIEDMONT PARK

Located at 1020 Piedmont Avenue, the building will rest between 10th and 11th Streets with a residential units wrapped around a five-story parking structure and a 25 story tower. A total of 330 homes. There will be a minimal 2,100 square feet of retail space.

Atlanta Realty Partners filed a building permit with the City of Atlanta and will spend some $2,500,000 to ready the site for construction. That would most likely include the demolition of older apartment buildings on the site.

At this time, MyMidtownMojo.com does not have any “before” photos but will capture them next week.

Here To Serve’s Shout Midtown Restaurant Closing Dec. 23 as Tom Catherall Retires | What Now Atlanta

December 21, 2014 by Thom Abbott

Shout did not have the best of relationships with nearby Hanover House and Colony Square condominiums due to noise issues from their patio and various events held there.  But, it sadly leaves another vacant spot in retail/restaurants in Midtown Atlanta.

Co-Founder Leigh Catherall set to helm restaurant group. Change could mean eviction for Twist and Prime, which I find interesting that Simon Properties is trying to kick them out of these two locations….unless they have been a problem tenant…or the space is more valuable for something else?

athenahealth Moves into Ponce City Marketplace

October 4, 2014 by Thom Abbott

Ponce City Market Hard Hat TourEarlier this week, the first tenant at the long awaited opening of the Ponce City Market moved into their offices!

athenahealth Moves into Ponce City Marketplace

Way back ( certainly over a year ago) I had the opportunity to tour the building as Jamestown was working to turn the building from awful to awesome…which they have. That’s where this photo on the right came from!

But this week, the space is starting to buzz as Watertown, MA-based athenahealth — a health IT company —  unveiled their  new 60,000-square-foot home inside the brick building . Initially, some  200 employees will occupy the space, but growth plans call for up to 600 people and double the space to 120,000 sq.ft within the next 5 years.

athenahealth employees will enjoy the awesome location of Ponce City Market next to the Beltline! Just across the street they’ll find Whole Foods and other stores! But from a living standpoint athenahealth employees will have some great options between Midtown Atlanta condos, apartments in the immediate area of The Market and quaint homes in the Virginia-Highland area.

We look forward to helping these new arrivals discover all that Midtown Atlanta has to offer, both for fun but for living as well!

Here is a link to the story in Curbed Atlanta with pictures of the new space. (We did not want to “borrow” photos we did not have permission to use…so check out the story and the space….pretty cool place to work for sure!

Yes, Music Midtown 2014 Has Arrived!

September 18, 2014 by Thom Abbott

Concert Photo Old TimeDespite the fact that the Midtown Neighbors’ Association voted it down….Music Midtown 2014 arrives in Midtown Atlanta at Piedmont Park this weekend.

For attendees that may not understand that position, just understand what it would be like if you had thousands upon thousands of people all over YOUR neighborhood for 3 days. One would guess you might not like that.

The biggest thing to remember if you are coming from ANYWHERE in Atlanta and you have access to MARTA or can drive to a MARTA station…..TAKE MARTA TO THE EVENT!! It’s an easy walk from the Midtown station on 10th Street to the Park.

If you are heading to the festival  here are some tips to help you get around!

Where to get in:

There will be five entrances into the festival grounds:

• The Charles Allen Gate, located at the corner of 10th Street and Charles Allen Drive.

• The Park Drive/Bridge Gate is available to attendees coming from Monroe and Park drives.

• The Lakeside Gate is accessible at the 14th Street entrance to the park or by Magnolia Hall.

• The 10th Street Gate, located across from Grady High School.

• The 12th Street Gate, located at 12th Street and Piedmont Avenue.

Music Midtown 2014 ticket sales will begin on-site at 2 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday at Box Office Central located at 10th Street and Charles Allen Drive as well as at 12th Street and the Greystone box office on Piedmont Avenue. Cost is $135 for a two-day general admission pass and $500 for VIP. Gates open at 4 p.m. Friday and noon Saturday.

Re-entry will be permitted, but you must have your ticket “scanned out” when exiting. You must use the same ticket to gain re-entry onto the festival grounds.

Hungry? No Problem!  Food trucks and concessions will be spread throughout Piedmont Park. There will be plenty of beverage choices of the adult and non-adult variety. Also, ATMs will be set up around the park.

Try. Try and respect the neighborhood you are in and put your trash where it belongs and if you need to “relieve yourself” do so in a porta potty!
